Flashback Friday: Katie & Sheila

While we’re on vacation this month, the Bicycle Built for Two team (and friends!) are revisiting some of our all-time favorite weddings!

Today’s wedding is from another one of our friends, Michelle, whose wedding & anniversary story appeared on the blog last year. When we asked for her flashback favorite, she picked Katie & Sheila’s South Carolina wedding from the fall of 2016.

From Michelle:

Everything about this wedding speaks to my heart—the colors, the setting, the tight budget. I deeply empathize with the struggle that comes from a long-distance relationship while one half is in another country—my own wife & began our courtship while she spent eight months away, most of that on the other side of the world. The photos of these ladies on their wedding day are evidence enough that their love is strong & beautiful, enough so that they can weather adversity and gather their loved ones together in celebration of who & what they are.

Favorite points: Guh, the dresses! Talk about “simplistically beautiful”! There’s nothing I don’t love about this wedding attire. (My wife & I also discussed wearing colored gowns while our bridemaids wore white, so my envy is showing a bit here.) The soft, dreamy pastels, the long clean lines of lace, the flower coronets: everything here works to showcase the image (my particular fave is the second-to-last one!) of a marriage built on love, trust, & the joy that comes from being together.

Wedding: Katie & Sheila

From the brides: After a crazy year of being hounded and ultimately outed by our conservative university (where we met!), we finally decided to show the world that love truly does win. Sheila had to go back to Canada for the summer due to immigration issues, but before she left, she proposed to Katie by a trickling stream with an opal ring from Etsy. The plan was to be married in August upon Sheila’s return to the States, and when Katie came up to Canada to visit, she surprised Sheila with the most tenderhearted, gorgeous, sandy-beach, ocean-side proposal. We both finally had our special rings and were officially, 100% engaged.

As mature college students, our budget was tight, but our wedding turned out simplistically beautiful. Our church family rallied around us, and friends and a little bit of family from far and wide came to support us and surround us with love on our special day. We couldn’t have asked for a sweeter group of people around us and had so much fun dressing up in colors while our bridesmaids wore white. We just don’t do things by the book.

Looking back, all we can see is the joy, even in the midst of the family chaos around us and the challenges we have and will face. We love each other more than ever and are so excited to spread that love.

Wedding: Lindsay & Jamie

From Lindsay & Jamie’s wedding planner, Sarah Day: Lindsay and Jamie got me involved after they had stared the planning process on their own and quickly became overwhelmed with not only the details but with the challenges of planning a same-sex wedding. They were, unfortunately, disappointed to discover that many vendors in the area were not very accepting of their marriage. So we tackled one vendor at a time, looking for vendors who not only captured the look and feel of what the brides wanted, but who also were open to and excited about working on a same-sex wedding. I was truly honored by the group of event professionals that we ultimately assembled to bring to life the vision that Lindsay had for her southern wedding. We had our final walk-through at the venue the same week the Supreme Court ruled to legalize same-sex weddings and we were all in tears as we walked through the property and knew that all our hard work was now not just producing a beautiful wedding but a wedding that would be recognized in all 50 states!

Weather can always a be tricky thing to deal with when planning an outdoor wedding. Georgia was under a particularly challenging deluge of rain this fall, but we were not going to let it slow us down. That morning I ran out and scoured the countryside (literally) for matching rain boots for the bridesmaids and as many umbrellas as I could find. We didn’t want to miss any photo opportunities as we were tromping through the mud! Thankfully we also had an incredible photography team that was in the trenches with us and didn’t miss a beat.

From Lindsay: My family is from up north (Pennsylvania, mostly), so we really wanted to throw them a “southern affair” when they visited Georgia. Our welcome bags at the hotel were filled with items from Georgia-based companies, and the favors incorporated Georgia (and my home state of Virginia). The food and decor was also very southern. So we had LEGAL lesbian wedding in small town Georgia. Pretty damn cool if you ask me!

Lindsay & Jamie’s wedding won two Belief IWP Awards— in the categories of Wedding Concept and Special Photo!
