Wedding: Mo & Stacey

From Amanda Photographic: Mo & Stacey are two of the most genuine people I’ve had the good fortune to meet since moving to Bend. We hit it off immediately over pints of cider and gushing about wedding plans, snowy adventures, and their dog Georgia. We started our photo-relationship with their engagement session at Edison Sno-Park just outside Bend, which contrasts so beautifully with their summer forest wedding at Horse Creek Lodge in McKenzie Bridge.

The wedding day started like any other… with a mountain bike ride. A dozen or so wedding guests joined them for a few “laps” around a forested trail system near the lodge while designated friends and family continued set up for the ceremony and reception later that afternoon. Both Mo and Stacey agreed that it was a great way to get some energy out while spending time with friends.

They got ready together while guests began to filter in and enjoy the teahouse tipi, lawn games, photo-booth, and scenery. When it was time for the service to begin the guests made their way down a wooded path with photos of the brides on either side; they were greeted by a sage smudging before entering the clearing. Both Mo and Stacey were walked part way down the aisle by their parents and Georgia; after a family hug the parents found their seats at the front while Stacey & Mo high-fived their way down the aisle – their roomie, Alicia, played her guitar and sang for the processional. A close friend, Jenni, officiated the ceremony while radiating love and joy over them; another friend, John Paul, made their rings and passed them between guests for blessings. Thoughtful vows were exchanged that were serious with a pinch of humor followed by placing a ring on the other’s finger. Another friend, Beth, read an original poem that she wrote for their wedding that left everyone who wasn’t already crying in tears. This was my FAVORITE part!

***

I asked Stacey & Mo what they thought about their special day. Here’s what they had to say:

What was your favorite part of the day?

Mo: The Ceremony. Stacey doing 15 push-ups in a wedding dress. (It totally happened!)

Stacey: The ceremony—looking out at all the smiles and the teary faces of our most favorite people….and sharing the most pivotal experience of my life with all of them. All of the hugs!

What are you most looking forward to in married life?

Mo: More adventures!

Stacey: Not planning another wedding. (Lol!)

What advice do you have for others?

Mo: Make lists, ask for help, invite people you want to build community with.

Stacey: Make lists and make more lists, Smaller is better—invite those closest to you, and those that you want to pull even tighter into your community. Delegate tasks…don’t do everything yourself. Ask for help—friends are resourceful and are always happy to help!

***

Soapbox: In some of our initial emails it was brought to my attention that planning a wedding and attempting to hire vendors was a bit of a daunting task. Each time Mo would email a potential vendor she would have to preface it with the fact that she and Stacey are a same-sex couple hoping to work with them. Fortunately there are sites like A Bicycle Built For Two, which is where they found me. It hadn’t occurred to me (privilege) that one aspect of wedding planning/vendor hiring that could be particularly stressful for queer couples is coming-out over and over and over again to strangers via email. Is this person LGBT-friendly? Affirming? In our current climate, being part of the LGBT community is hard enough. Planning a wedding is hard enough. Doing both probably feels impossible sometimes. …which to me is complete crap! Nobody should feel sadness, fear, pain, or loss because of who they love. If you are fortunate enough to love and be loved by another human being hold on to it with everything you have…and give a big middle finger to anyone who tries to take that away from you. Mo & Stacey—I adore you both, your love for adventure, your fierce commitment to your community, and the work you both do. Thank you for letting me celebrate you!!!

Wedding: Carole & Louise

From Carole & Louise’s photographer: Carole & Louise had a relaxed barn wedding in the UK. The day was set in the rolling countryside. They had a bright colour scheme, with orange details and flowers. Both brides wore white trousers and tops—the typical princess wedding dress wasn’t for them. Very in keeping with the relaxed vibe of the day, focus was on friends, family, and good food.

Wedding: Nellie & Lauren

From Natural Shotz, the couple’s photographers: Nellie and Lauren were married at the Awbury Arboretum located in Germantown Philadelphia, PA. While the forecast called for rain into the late evening hours, the rain miraculously stopped as the brides walked down the isle. Friends and family members gathered to celebrate Nellie and Lauren’s love in a beautiful outdoor celebration. Their rustic harvest wedding theme shined through their decorations and center pieces like baskets of apples with delicious homemade apple butter. Their wedding reception included live music, hilarious and theatrical speeches, and lots of dancing.

Wedding: Mariah & Natacha

From Mariah: Our wedding day was very special for many reasons. A big one was the location. We were fortunate enough to get married at Meech Lake, in the backyard of my childhood home, right on the water. This really added to the intimate outdoors/nature theme that we wanted. My partner and I were able to get away for a few minutes after the ceremony by escaping in a canoe. Being able to have a few private moments floating in the middle of the lake to just reflect on our union was priceless. We got engaged on a canoe trip, so it was fitting that there was a canoe on our wedding day.

We had unbelievable support from our family and friends who helped us with many DIY projects that added a very warm and personal touch to our setting. My brothers hiked into the woods to find birch logs and together built our archway that we were married under. It was a labour of love. We decided to have an open bar. In the eyes of our guests, best decision ever. We still hear about it! We were very fortunate to have found vendors and services with people who really took the time to hear what we wanted and who delivered exactly what we hoped for—from our awesome DJ who kept the party going late into the night to our awesome photographers who climbed onto the roof of the house to get that perfect group shot. It made the day run smoothly and provided us with everlasting memories.

Gallery: Superb Succulents

I (Ashley) am a proud owner of a small jade plant appropriately (and not very creatively) named Little Plant. As Little Plant is probably the only thing I’ve successfully grown, I am extremely fond of it… and so when I see a wedding that features succulents, I’m always extra excited.

Succulents can be a funky alternative to traditional bouquets, add flair to a cake, and adorably point guests to their seats. Check out how these couples integrated their own little plants into their ceremonies!

Wedding: Alyssa & Amanda

From Amanda: Although Alyssa and I live in Brooklyn, we knew we wanted a fall wedding, and we had envisioned a slightly more rustic setting than New York City. We found the perfect hilltop venue just a few hours north of NYC in Hudson, NY. Hudson is a gorgeous town near the Catskills with amazing views, great restaurants, and stellar antique shopping. It’s also (kind of) between Pittsburgh and Boston, our respective hometowns. We arrived a day early to hang lights and decorate our venue with help from a tireless brigade of friends and family. Our guests mostly stayed in B&Bs in downtown Hudson and had a chance to explore the area over the course of the weekend. The only hiccup … the weekend turned unseasonably cold (it actually snowed the day after the wedding). We had to scramble to rent indoor heaters for our barn venue, and forgo most of the outdoor activities we’d planned. If you can’t tell from the photos, we were freezing by the time it was our turn to take couple shots. At one point, the photographer asked us to put our hands on each other’s faces and we refused because our hands were both icy cold. Otherwise, with the help, support, and love of an amazing group of friends and family, the wedding was a beautiful celebration.
