Wedding: Mirhanda & MB

From the couple: For most of our (admittedly short) engagement, we thought we were going to elope. Large gatherings are not really our thing, and we would much rather spend the day reading in a tea room. Ultimately, though, all 6 of our Southern parents got involved, and the rest is history.

In the end, our theme became “It’s Not a Wedding Without _______.” In place of gifts, our guests brought the one thing they thought was essential for any wedding to have. By the end of the day, we had flowers, dresses, cake, a photographer, and a trip to Asheville. One of our friends even brought herself as our last-minute officiant (Thanks, Mo!).

The day was wonderful, and we joke that we must be the only couple to be surprised by their own wedding!

Flashback Friday: Katie & Sheila

While we’re on vacation this month, the Bicycle Built for Two team (and friends!) are revisiting some of our all-time favorite weddings!

Today’s wedding is from another one of our friends, Michelle, whose wedding & anniversary story appeared on the blog last year. When we asked for her flashback favorite, she picked Katie & Sheila’s South Carolina wedding from the fall of 2016.

From Michelle:

Everything about this wedding speaks to my heart—the colors, the setting, the tight budget. I deeply empathize with the struggle that comes from a long-distance relationship while one half is in another country—my own wife & began our courtship while she spent eight months away, most of that on the other side of the world. The photos of these ladies on their wedding day are evidence enough that their love is strong & beautiful, enough so that they can weather adversity and gather their loved ones together in celebration of who & what they are.

Favorite points: Guh, the dresses! Talk about “simplistically beautiful”! There’s nothing I don’t love about this wedding attire. (My wife & I also discussed wearing colored gowns while our bridemaids wore white, so my envy is showing a bit here.) The soft, dreamy pastels, the long clean lines of lace, the flower coronets: everything here works to showcase the image (my particular fave is the second-to-last one!) of a marriage built on love, trust, & the joy that comes from being together.

Wedding: Carol & Anna

From Erin, Carol and Anna’s photographerCarol and Anna have been together 16 years. These two incredible women met the “old fashioned way”, playing softball. It’s not everyday that two beautiful souls find their way into each other’s lives the way that Carol and Anna did, it’s just so seldom nowadays. After meeting these two, spending time with them and laughing with them, it’s easy to see how they fell for one another. The weather on the day of Carol and Anna’s wedding was stunning, the sun was shinning, the sky was deep blue and the air was tickled with just a hint of cool. It was a gorgeous day, full of love, smiles, adoring looks and lots and lots of friends who surrounded these two with so much love and joy! Carol and Anna’s wedding ceremony and reception left everyone who was there feeling inspired and happy. Inspired to love and to live fully, to embrace marriage equality and perhaps to embrace the Patriots and the Red Sox, just a little bit more.

Wedding: Angie & Cynthia

From Dani, Angie & Cynthia’s photographer: Thanks to the recommendation of a colleague, Angie and Cynthia first experienced DeLille Cellars within their initial months in Seattle. What was to have been a simple hour wine tasting became a several-hour opportunity to make new friends, experience some of Washington’s greatest wine and dream of being married in a picturesque place like the DeLille Chateau. The passing of marriage equality in Washington state marked a historic and joyous moment for the couple – their dream of being married would become a reality. Their late September afternoon wedding surpassed every expectation they had – a weekend-long celebration including the love and support of so many family and friends. If you ask them, they will tell you how blessed they feel to have experienced what was, simply, the best day of their lives!

Wedding(s!): Erica & Alex (Part 2)

From Erica: Six months after our ceremony in England, we flew out to California for our very country wedding in my hometown in Northern California. This time we had a full bridal party with friends from high school and college and my best friend wrote and performed our commitment ceremony (including a homily that brought us to tears!). The whole day was hosted as the local county fair grounds, so we camped up the country theme! Guests arrived to fresh apple cider and sweet breads (pumpkin, apple & cinnamon) while a local celtic band played on hay bales. Our ceremony was in a little tucked-away garden. We included a hand-binding ceremony and requested that our parents, bridal party, and guests sign a marriage certificate as our ‘legal’ acts. The evening consisted of cocktails, a tri-tip BBQ buffet, speeches, and copious amounts of dancing to cheesy pop music. The room was decorated with autumnal fabrics in embroidery hoops, English bunting, Christmas lights, and red accents. Our table decorations/favours were homemade jars of jams, tomatoes, salsa, beets—anything red!—made and decorated by our family and friends! As we had over 120 people there for the day, family and friends were also massive in helping set-up and clear-up. We will be forever grateful for all who chipped in to help create both weddings!

We honeymooned the following year in Dubrovnik, Croatia, and continue to make our home in London, England. We were thought we were ‘done’ getting married but then SCOTUS and the UK parliament started to make moves towards marriage equality in 2014 and we got excited that we might actually be able to be MARRIED (and legally recognized!!) in both countries…but that’s a different post!
