Engagement: Jenn & Allie

From the couple: Jenn & Allie met during a World Ready Women retreat at their alma mater eight years ago. After the weekend, they promised to hang out again. They finally hung out when they discovered they were going to be RAs together. During the first day of RA training, they snuck away and went to Starbucks together. From then on, they were inseparable BFFs. They took a thousand trips together, got their noses pierced, ate lunch together everyday, and even stood together side by side for over 12 hours to touch Kanye’s hand at the Governor’s Ball Music Festival. Allie went off to grad school at Duquesne while Jenn finished her last year at Chatham, and they were both super excited when Jenn got into The New School. Jenn moved to NYC, went to school and worked at Squarespace– and they visited each other *almost* every weekend. Jenn spent her summers in Pittsburgh and after the second summer decided that she didn’t want to be away from her BFF anymore. Jenn officially moved in with Allie and her sisters, spent every weekend with Allie, and found an amazing Pittsburgh job. Allie went to Ghana and started her PhD. One morning, Allie woke up and realized that she wanted to spend every day for the rest of her life with Jenn. She let her know, and they went and got iced soy lattes and walked around the reservoir to talk about it. So they decided to get a cute little red Prius and officially move in together. They’ve lived happily ever after with their Boston terrier Tulip ever since.

For the engagement, Allie decided to plan a surprise proposal in Amsterdam during their long-awaited European frolic fest. She secretly got in touch with one of Jenn’s friends on Instagram to figure out the best place and a photographer. She also asked all of Jenn’s family and friends to send postcards with what they love about Jenn written on them. The ring was in hand, all she had to do was get her plan together!

On the morning of August 13 (we take our #sundaysareforlovers very seriously!) we were already running late to, what Jenn thought, was a lesiuresly stroll through the park. After finally getting on a train into Amsterdam from our hotel, the train stalled. It was after 10 already, and Allie had arranged for them to meet the photographer there without Jenn knowing. She was freaking out. But she had a plan on the fly.

Allie asked Jenn if she’d like any reading material for sitting on the train. She pulled out the postcard from Jenn’s mom and dad. They both started to cry (sorry to the woman sitting across from us on the train who probably had no idea what was going on!). Allie handed postcards from Jenn’s nephews, brother, and sister-in-law. By the time Jenn finished reading them, the train had arrived at the stop near the park.

After Jenn nearly got hit by a moped, they arrived at Vondelpark. Allie covertly got the signal from photographer extraordinaire, Nicole Olwagen, and simultaneously while following Nicole and leading Jenn without revealing who Nicole was, she started to hand more postcards from Jenn’s family and friends. Jenn and Allie floated to the spot where Nicole lead them, and Allie got down on one knee to ask Jenn to marry her.

After saying yes, and hugging each other, Jenn whispered to Allie that she thought someone was photographing them, and Allie revealed that it was in fact part of the plan, PHEW! Nicole lead Jenn and Allie around for a fabulous photo shoot, and after they enjoyed the biggest Dutch pancakes ever.

They celebrated one week of being engaged with an ultimate #sundaysareforlovers in Paris doing some of their favorite things: breakfast in bed listening to Ella, strolling the streets, and a picnic at the Eiffel Tower park with Allie reading Jenn French love poems. Their wedding is planned for summer 2019, ten years after meeting at Chatham University.

Engagement: Allison & Tiffany

From the couple’s photographer, Cassandra: For Allison and Tiffany, it was love at first sight. Playful, lighthearted, and endlessly making one another laugh, these lovebirds infuse joy in all who surround them.

Our original plans to visit a Nashville park for Allison and Tiffany’s destination engagement were very much canceled when the skies opened up and it stormed the entire weekend. We moved our session to the gorgeous Gaylord Opryland Resort, which featured architectural details, palms, fountains, and even beautiful New Orleans-style buildings — which all made for the perfect location to celebrate their upcoming “I Do’s.”

Link Love: I Feel Love in This Chili’s Tonight

We’re back with more Link Love, an occasional feature where we celebrate something we love in the LBTQ+ wedding space!

chilis

It’s finally Friday—and I’ve been waiting all week to share this Link Love because, really, how could we *not* let you know about this amazing couple and their Chili’s engagement shoot? Ashley and I love Chili’s so much that this winter, we celebrated our fifth (dating) anniversary with sizzlin’ fajitas—so it goes without saying that we were enthused by these adorable pictures of writer Krista Doyle (author of the book Does This Bible Belt Make Me Look Gay?) and her fiancee!

For more photos from this chips-and-salsa lovefest, head on over to The Advocate, and read about how Krista tweeted their photos to Chili’s and the chain responded with a special congratulatory gift. Pam Beasley would be proud, don’t you think?

Look for Link Love every Friday through the end of August—and drop us a line if you have a suggestion for a featured link!

Engagement: Allison & Alex

From the lovely Cass, Allison & Alex’s photographer: From the moment I met Allison and Alex, I already adored them. They have a refreshing and captivating type of love—one that makes you feel incredibly lucky to witness. When they’re together, they get lost in each other’s eyes and words, and the world around them dissolves. They’re head-over-heels and absolute soulmates.

Allison and Alex initially bonded at breweries over craft beers, and their love blossomed on long shared hikes. And so, for their sweet summertime engagement, we ventured into the woods as the golden sun poured down upon us, and delighted in a joyful, laughter-filled hike.

Engagement: Ashley & Maggie(!!!)

Remember when we said we had some exciting news to share? We got engaged! For about as long as we’ve been working on A Bicycle Built for Two, we’ve been talking about this occasion, but last month, I finally put a ring on it (as they say).

Ashley and I met while studying abroad at Oxford, so when we decided to go back for a quick visit this June, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to propose in the place where it all began! With the help of a few of her friends, I concocted a series of increasingly improbable scenarios that led us to the beautiful Worcester College gardens, where, way back in 2011, we had spent many happy hours strolling, drinking Pimm’s, and yes, occasionally studying.

After eliminating possible proposal locations #1 and #2, I led us to location #3: the main quad, where I got down on one knee (just like a straight man in a movie!) and pulled out the ring, which was secreted away in my purse. After many exclamations of “Oh my god!,” Ashley said that “Of course!” she would marry me, and we celebrated with tea and scones—as well as this lovely photo shoot.

Finding an engagement photographer from across the pond was actually trickier than I had been expecting, that is, until I found the awesome Marianne Chua, who calls herself the world’s only “funtojournalist.” Although she doesn’t normally do engagements, I somehow charmed her into coming up from London to frolic with us around the amazing Bodleian Libraries, the gorgeous Worcester College gardens, and finally, our favorite kebab stand, where we celebrated the end of a perfect day with fried chicken, chips (a.k.a. french fries), cheese, and a healthy dose of “burger sauce.” As promised, working with Marianne was a blast—and as you can see, the final product was (in our humble opinions) nothing short of stunning!

Engagement: Ali & Sammi

From the couple: Ali and Sammi met (twice) in the fall of 2013, when they were both students at NYU Law School. Their first meeting took place at an event at the Stonewall Inn, hosted by the law school’s LGBT student group, aptly named “OUTLaw”, where, according to Ali, her very obvious romantic advances were rebuffed, and according to (an apparently oblivious) Sammi, a cute girl with a cool haircut was trying to make friends with her. When the ladies rendez-vous’d a second time (at—where else?—a school dance), thanks to the help of some mutual friends, the sparks were much more obvious. Sammi proposed first, just over two years later, while bringing Ali her weekly Saturday morning coffee in bed, and Ali returned the favor a week later, popping the question at the Met, in front of a gorgeous wall of windows looking out onto Central Park.

The couple, now both lawyers, live together in Greenwich Village, and wanted an engagement shoot that captured the spirit of the neighborhood where they live and where they fell in love. With the help of photographer Alicia Swedenborg, the ladies were able to realize their vision of a cozy downtown NYC winter wonderland shoot.

Engagement: Lauren & Kaitlyn

From the future brides: Kaitlyn works as a labor and delivery nurse in D.C. and is currently studying at Georgetown to become a Nurse Practitioner in Women’s Health and Midwifery. Lauren teaches third grade. One fateful day, we both “swiped right” on a dating app called Tinder.

We met up for our first date at the National Gallery on October 1st, 2014. Lauren claims to have known instantly that Kaitlyn was “the one.” After walking around the museum to find Degas’ Little Dancer, we were so immersed in conversation that we missed the crosswalk light twice in a row en route to a nearby wine bar. We figured that was a good “sign,” pun intended, and we’ve been inseparable ever since.

After two years of dating, Lauren and her best friend Ekaterina found themselves walking into the same lobby of the National Gallery where the couple had first met. Kaitlyn had ostensibly headed to a meeting that morning for the Lifespan Sexuality Education program (Our Whole Lives) she teaches to middle schoolers through the Unitarian Universalist Church. This explains the all-consuming surprise Lauren felt upon seeing Kaitlyn walk towards her and drop to one knee. Not only did Kaitlyn ask the easiest question Lauren had ever heard (Will you marry me?), but also she’d hired a photographer to capture the whole thing!

The wedding is planned for the summer of 2017.
