Wedding: Amy & Amanda

From Amanda: Amy and I have lived all over the country and have friends and family everywhere. We chose to have our wedding in Illinois for a few different reasons: 1) we love Chicago 2) it was legal in Illinois when we started planning and 3) it’s centrally located for guests to fly /drive to. Since we don’t live in Chicago, we needed someone to help us chose vendors and help us through the planning process. Our wedding planner, Lisa Gordon, did a phenomenal job.

Once Amy and I started discussing wedding plans, we quickly came to the conclusion that we wanted something small with lots of charm, simple, and most of all fun. When Lisa sent us the information for Firehouse Chicago, we immediately fell in love with its charm and character. Amy has an outspoken love for spiral staircases and when we saw it lit up, we knew that this was the place for us. We wanted simple decorations and the Firehouse delivered that with their candle and light package. Another great thing about the Firehouse was that we used the courtyard for the ceremony then went directly inside to start kick off the reception. Having the ceremony and reception at the same place made the logistics a lot easier. We chose to have an open bar from the moment guests arrived until the end of the night, which made potentially socially awkward moments early in the night due to some of our guests never having met before less of an issue. The fact that Binny’s will take back any non-opened alcohol allowed us to over-purchase and not worry about running out of drinks.

Amy’s favorite part of the day (besides marrying me and the spiral staircase of course) was riding around downtown Chicago and stopping to take pictures with our bridal party and photographer Agnes Malorny. We have several favorite photos from the day, but our absolute favorite is the one of us standing on a ledge hanging out over the Lake Michigan with the skyline in the background. We had that one printed on 3ft x 1ft piece of metal which is now the focal point in our living room. My personal favorites were the matching converse shoes that we had made with our wedding date sewn into the side and the mini cupcakes that Dave’s Specialty Foods provided. They were SO good. I ate them the next morning and still talk about them today. We don’t have any wedding day horror stories because ALL of the vendors we chose to work with were wonderful. We didn’t have to worry about a single thing that day except enjoying the moment and sharing our love for each other with family and friends.

Wedding: Julie & Laura

From Heather at Greatest Expectations, Julie & Laura’s wedding planner: Julie & Laura were married at Chicago’s Ignite Glass Studios. They are two of the most joyful, fun-loving women we’ve ever met. Their energy was contagious throughout their beautiful wedding day, and their personalities were carried through every detail – homemade candle favors, riddles on the table numbers, and s’mores for dessert.

Wedding: Sarah & Jesse

From Carol, Sarah & Jesse’s photographer: Jesse contacted me last year about photographing her destination wedding in Chicago. Both she and Sarah now live in Las Vegas, but it was in Chicago where the met and fell in love. They got married at J2 Gallery in Chicago, which made an awesome wedding venue. I had never had the opportunity to photograph a wedding at an art gallery and now I can cross that off my list! They decorated with candy, pumpkins, and with orange and purple. Fall weddings are really my favorite since I love all the colors surrounding them and the weather is usually not sweltering.
Their ceremony was emotional! Hearing the letters that they had wrote each other expressing their love brought me to tears behind my camera. Yes, I still cry at pretty much every wedding I photograph. Seeing two people that in love is really inspiring! Jesse and Sarah were down for anything photo-wise, so we headed outside to get some great urban images showcasing Chicago, then we got lost a bit……then we found our way back! Getting a little lost was worth it for all the cool city art we found.

Wedding: Rachel & Zendzi

From Rachel and Zendzi’s event planning and design team: Rachel and Zendzi met 3 years ago while working with children, a passion they both share, at a public school in Chicago, IL. They started as friends and came to forge a deep friendship. Ultimately realizing there was so much more between them, they began dating. I had the pleasure of watching their amazing relationship grow from acquaintance, to friendship, to romantic interest, to their realization that they had found their soulmate. Together they inspire each other to be the best version of themselves, to always reach for their goals, and they challenge each other to constantly strive to make the world a better place through activism and advocacy.

Once Rachel and Zendzi, our long-time friends, got engaged and asked us to plan their wedding, we were beyond excited to try and translate their love into a personal and intimate celebration that represented them. Rachel and Zendzi got married this past October surrounded by their closest friends and family in Chicago, IL. Their wedding was so uniquely them from beginning to end. The ceremony, held at a repurposed fire station, began with Zendzi sliding down a fire pole to meet Rachel and walk down the aisle together. From that point on it was a nonstop rollercoaster of love and laughter. Zendzi’s outfit was not only stylish but also extremely sentimental as she wore a vest made out of her late father’s signature Dashiki and Rachel also honored his legacy by wearing the same pattern on the inside of her cape. The officiants, two close friends of the brides, filled the entire room with both tears and ear to ear smiles as they tackled the huge feat of putting into words the great love and relationship that is Rachel and Zendzi.

Other highlights from their amazing wedding included, the traditional African custom of jumping the broom, having their first dance sung live by Rachel’s college roommate, beautiful quotes displayed on wooden signs around the room from their parents, a wedding raffle with silly prizes, and the most epic dance party I’ve ever been apart of.

Rachel and Zendzi both independently light up a room with their vivacity and together brought all of their guests to another world during their wedding ceremony and reception and I love looking back at the photos to relive this exceptional day over and over!

Wedding: Jamie & Jesse

From Carol, Jamie and Jesse’s photographer: Jamie and Jesse’s wedding was really quite the party. Great company, great food, and great music all surrounding them and their special day. It was a very warm August day with the sun shining and no rain in sight. We started at the Public Hotel which was a gorgeous backdrop for Jamie getting ready in. Their suite was a photographer’s dream, all white walls, white couches, white floor– it was stunning to say the least! Jamie and Jesse elected to do a first look, which I was so excited about. When they finally saw each other Jesse was almost speechless at her gorgeous bride and had such a big smile on her face.

Next we headed to South Pond in Lincoln Park do to Jesse and Jamie’s wedding photos of them together before the ceremony. It was the perfect backdrop of city and foliage. I love having that time to do these images before the wedding as it gives the couple more time for their portraits of them together which will adorn their walls for years to come.

From there we jumped in an uber cab and headed to Zed 451 where they were wed in a beautiful service. Jamie walked down the aisle to a cover of The Weepies’ “Gotta Have You” by Daniela Andrade. The party started right after that on the roof-top bar, which was followed by the most amazing dinner at Zed451. Imagine if a Brazilian steakhouse only served the best cuts of meat and a delicious array of cheeses, salads, and other delectable appetizers, then imagine it was all you could eat. Delicious is a serious understatement!

They danced their first dance to “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” a Beatles cover sang by Mafer Rodriguez. Jesse sang it while dancing with Jamie and they had so much fun with it! The night ended with everyone getting their dance on to the amazing music being played by the DJ while a Go-Pro made its way onto the dance floor. Congratulations, Jamie and Jesse!

Wedding: Andrea & Julie

From Andrea and Julie: We were married Memorial Day weekend at Morgan’s on Fulton in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, historically known as the meatpacking district. Right off the bat we knew we wanted a venue with an unmistakeable Chicago feel. We also wanted to keep everything simple and not let others define what our wedding should or should not be. Nearly 100 friends and family members gathered to celebrate us taking this wondrous and very natural next step together. Julie elected to wear black; she didn’t want to let antiquated notions of must-wear-a-white-wedding-dress get in the way of personal style preference. Her ensemble also included a birdcage veil, a faux fur wrap, and a selfie stick. Andrea, photographed with her friends getting ready at Soho House Chicago, also chose classic black, donning a bespoke suit with marbleized pattern tie from Lifetime Collective, complete with two tone wingtips and dinosaur socks. Julie’s design firm, Studio K, provided a gorgeous backdrop constructed with resin leaves. The night was beautiful, and to have so many of the people we love within 100 feet of us at all times was an incredible feeling.

Wedding: Erin & Mo

From Erin and Mo: Our wedding was held at the Westin in Itasca, IL. It had a beautiful welcoming atrium and an elegant indoor tent, which we used for both the ceremony and reception. We had lots of guests come from out of town, and loved the idea that the ceremony, cocktail hour, reception, after party, and next-morning brunch were all held in the same venue. Additionally, the hotel grounds were extremely well kept, and we had no trouble finding places to take photos (not to mention, the weather could not have been more perfect that day).

We waited to see each other (and each other’s dresses) until the first glance. We did, however, plan our matching shoes: Toms Wedges (and colorful Toms Slip Ons for the reception). We wanted our day to be classy, but also fun and laid back. Our photos definitely show both sides of that! We certainly had to throw some rainbow into the mix, so we sported some colorful sunglasses with our wedding party. Speaking of colors, our florist provided us with the most gorgeous flower arrangements. All we did was give her some ideas with a few specific flower requests, and she did the rest. When our friends and family share memories from the wedding, they still talk about the flowers!

Incorporating friends into various aspects of our ceremony made it so special. In addition to our wedding party, personal friends included our officiant, our reader, our friend who hand-wrote the font for the programs, and our musicians. Having live music for the ceremony was really important to us, as we’re both musicians. Maureen even composed the music that we walked down the aisle to. Erin was escorted by both her parents, and Maureen by her uncle. We had a special acknowledgement of Maureen’s late father and other relatives who have passed away, in order to pay tribute to how they have influenced our lives.

We had lots of fun personalizing our wedding. We each wrote the other a love letter, and during the ceremony, placed these letters into a box with a bottle of wine to be opened on our first anniversary. We designed and printed our own invitations and place cards with the help of Bridget at Paper Source. Our friend, Jeff, took photos of us (mostly silly ones) holding giant numbers cut out of poster board, and we used these photos as our table numbers. Don’t tell Maureen’s percussionist friends, but we cut a slit in a snare drum head and used it as a card holder. We even let our guests show their own creativity by encouraging them to sign the guest book next to an artsy thumbprint self portrait. Erin’s handmade cake toppers, though, really… took the cake!

We’re happy, fun-loving people, and we wanted our wedding day to reflect that. We wanted our guests to be comfortable, and as this was probably the first same-sex wedding for many of them, we wanted it to be full of love and acceptance. We didn’t necessarily go out of our way to emphasize our same-sex relationship, but we were just true to ourselves and let the love shine through on its own. After all, that was what this day was all about!
