Since their wedding just over three years ago, South African couple Anlin and Denise have been busy enjoying life with their kids—including a new baby girl!—and each other. Flash back to their proposal and lovely outdoor wedding, then read on to find out what else they’ve been up to!
Give us a life update! Have there been any major milestones since we heard from you last? (New houses, new babies, new brownie recipes to share…)
We got married on 16 February 2013, and in June that year moved to a bigger home, it took us a while to settle in, but it soon was home to us! In 2014 we decided to grow our family, as Denise has always wanted a child, and we thought the time was right. We saw the fertility specialist in August, and in September, Denise had 2 AIs. In mid-September, we received the news that she was pregnant! We were ecstatic!!!
Our daughter, Riëtte was born on May 15th, 2015, making us mommies of 3: 18-year-old Celine, 9-year-old-Lana, and little Riëtte! We spent most of 2015 just being in our little “baby bubble.” As for the brownie recipe, I found the most amazing pre-mix! 😉
Today, just a few weeks after our third wedding anniversary, I am still as in love with Denise as I was right in the beginning. Seeing her or thinking about her gives me butterflies in my tummy, and I cannot wait to get home in the evening after work to spend time with her and our family!
What is your favorite thing about being married?
Anlin: I love waking up with Denise in the mornings, and knowing that, God willing, we will go to sleep together again in the evening. I married my best friend—cliché, I know, but it truly is so! We share everything, and we have no secrets from each other, except maybe a surprise gift!
Denise: Sharing every moment of my life with the person I love and cherish with my whole heart and soul.
What do you fight about?
Anlin: We don’t fight. We have minor disagreements about things, which mostly are out of our control.
Denise: Anlin’s ex-husband, mostly. Other than that not really about anything— we really do compliment each other’s personalities.
What advice would you give to people who have just gotten married?
Denise: Communicate about anything and everything. Doing so ensures that you’re both on the same page, always. Keep your partner’s love tank full, i.e. lots of kisses and hugs, whispering sweet nothings in her ear, and so on…
What do you like best about your wife?
Anlin: Denise is the perfect partner. She truly cares for me and my needs, and she is an amazing mother, even to my daughters from a previous marriage.
Denise: Her smile, the way she always makes me feel loved, and her divine mac and cheese!
Describe a typical day in 5 words (or slightly more!)
Anlin: Coffee/tea in bed, work, spending time with baby, relaxing together.
Denise: Rush to school, rush to work, rush to school, rush home, glass of wine.
What is one thing you and your partner do to relax?
Denise: We loved going to the movies, but since the arrival of our little one, Riette, this has been few and far between. Now sneaking away for a cup of coffee is big for us!
What is the best wedding gift you received?
Anlin: For both of us, it must be our matching Caran D’Ache pens from Switzerland from dear friends. Whenever I write something with it, it reminds me of our beautiful and very special day!
What moment from your wedding still stands out the most in your mind?
Anlin: I must be honest, the whole day was special; however if I have to highlight one, it must be when our master of ceremonies read out a letter Denise wrote me. It had me in tears!
Denise: Our opening of the dance floor. We practised for weeks prior to our wedding to get the “swing” steps right!
If you had to compare your marriage to a food or animal, what would you choose and why?
Anlin: A lioness. We both provide and care ferociously for our family. We are caring, playful and loving.
Denise: A chocolate—always sweet, from beginning to end.
Brides Revisited is a new series in which we check back in with the couples who’ve appeared on our site in the past. If you and your one true person are interested in being featured, we’d love to hear from you—whether you call yourselves brides, brooms, spouses, or something else entirely!
