Wedding: Mirhanda & MB

From the couple: For most of our (admittedly short) engagement, we thought we were going to elope. Large gatherings are not really our thing, and we would much rather spend the day reading in a tea room. Ultimately, though, all 6 of our Southern parents got involved, and the rest is history.

In the end, our theme became “It’s Not a Wedding Without _______.” In place of gifts, our guests brought the one thing they thought was essential for any wedding to have. By the end of the day, we had flowers, dresses, cake, a photographer, and a trip to Asheville. One of our friends even brought herself as our last-minute officiant (Thanks, Mo!).

The day was wonderful, and we joke that we must be the only couple to be surprised by their own wedding!

Wedding: Patricia & Arielle

It’s not every day that we get to feature a wedding with the SAME THEME as our blog!

From Patricia and Arielle’s photographers, Simply K Studios: Patricia and Arielle walked into our studio on June 26, 2015, the historic day that our Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage nationwide. I’m not sure I could have been more excited to hear their story and listen to their wedding plans! From that first day, I knew these two would have an amazing wedding, and we couldn’t be happier for them.

From Patricia: Eight years ago, I started my nursing career at a children’s hospital where I met Arielle who had already been a nurse for two years. If you ask her, it was love at first sight, but for me, I had just gotten out of a long relationship and was not ready to date again. For two years we became the best of friends. We were inseparable from day one, doing everything from baseball games to hiking/biking to cuddling up watching our favorite movies. I began to wonder why I couldn’t go a day without talking to or seeing —and finally I came to my senses and realized my feelings had grown into so much more than a friendship. I’ll never forget that evening when I told her how I felt and the smile on her face.

Six years have flown by, with ups and downs along the way, but we have always come out stronger than ever. We bought our dream house and dream dog and started our lives together. There were talks of getting married and days of ring shopping, but we knew we wanted to keep the proposals a surprise. I proposed to Arielle one night while we were playing Scrabble (her favorite game). She had no idea it was coming since we had spent all day doing yard work. I hid the ring in the letter bag while she wasn’t looking, and to my surprise it took almost the entire game for her to pull it out. Before I knew it, I was in front of her, asking her to spend her life with me. Lucky for me, she said  yes!

Arielle proposed to me two months later after I had gotten back from a trip to Minnesota. She had put together a sign of glow-in-the-dark stars with my family and cut a Harry Potter book (my favorite series to date) to the chapter “The Unbreakable Vow” for the ring box. When we lay in bed that night and the lights went out, “Marry Me” was glowing above us, and there she was with the book and ring. It was my idea of the perfect proposal.

Wedding planning wasn’t always easy, but our visions were on the same page. We chose a bicycle theme, which fit because of our love of the outdoors and biking, as well as our adventure tandem biking the Golden Gate Bridge. We found a few old bikes at a shop and restored them as decorations, as well as borrowing a vintage bike from our friend for pictures. Our personal touches were on every aspect of the day: from table settings with coffee in hand-stamped burlap bags as favors to the room lit up with tea lights and mason jar lights, and our Oreo dessert bar (my favorite dessert!). We wrote our entire ceremony (with a little help from the internet LOL), which was performed by one of our best friends, and when we exchanged vows, it was that fairytale moment, filled with excitement to start a new chapter in our lives together. Our wedding day was more than we could’ve hoped for, surrounded by everyone we love.

Wedding: Dalene & Victoria

From Dalene & Victoria: We’ve been together five years! We married six months ago, in October. It rained for the first time in ages in California, so we had to tarp our sunset wedding. But it was perfect! Our ceremony setup was unusually intimate, so it was as though we were close to our guests, who we asked not to stand when we proceeded down the long stairs to our altar. It was a perfect day celebrating our union with our 75 closest friends and family members!

Wedding: Kourtney & Alana

From Kourtney & Alana: On November 4, 2016, we were married in front of our family and friends in Estes Park, Colorado. We landed on Mary’s Lake Lodge in Estes Park because decorations that were needed would be minimal since we had the backdrop of Rocky Mountain National Park. We decided on things that were important to us: a venue, photographer, an awesome DJ, and enough booze to keep our guests dancing the night away.

We had growler centerpieces that had pictures of those relatives who were no longer with us printed on them. A cigar bar, an amazing DJ with a bright pink mohawk, a photo booth where we had guests sign the backdrop as our ‘guest book,’ a florist who incorporated Colorado’s mountain flowers in arrangements that were simple and rustic—we made sure to focus on things that were perfectly us. We both walked down the aisle with our dads to Elle Goulding’s “How Long Will I Love You.” Our best friend officiated the wedding. While we each only had one maid of honor, we wanted our other friends to feel included, so before the wedding we sent out a letter asking them to all wear different shades of the same color. It turns out our friends are pretty good at matching, so you could tell they were still special to us, even if we didn’t have a big bridal party.

As we planned our special day, the one thing we could not plan on was the amount of love our family and friends brought with them. It ended up being a weekend of fun and a celebration of love. Family from both coasts came together, and it reaffirmed our belief that if you lead with love, love will always win.

Wedding: Rocio & Riza

From Riza: Rocio and I met on October 1st, 2010, Rocio proposed to me on October 1st, 2015, and we were married on Oct 1st, 2016. We both love the desert and decided to have an outdoor wedding at the Le Haute Desert Aerie in Pioneertown. We walked down the aisle to mariachis playing and we were married by our close friend Sara. For the reception we served ceviche and chorizo tostadas as an appetizer and tacos for dinner. My friend Sam, who I went college with was the DJ, and she kept everyone dancing the entire night. Having our closest friends and family all together and dancing in one place was an amazing experience. It was the happiest, and hands down, the best day of my life!

Wedding: Kaysey & Jacque

From Kaysey: Jacque and I married on a beautiful autumn day in Portland at Holocene, a local club/venue that hosts many queer dance parties that we have enjoyed over the years. Out friends and family did a brilliant job decorating and bringing the warm colors of autumn into the room. My little brother sang an original song as we walked down the aisle. Our best friend Mark married us, and we all nervously giggled together. We served tacos and cupcakes and spent the night dancing to our favorite songs. It was the most joyful room I have ever been in. My advice: make the ceremony your own. If you want to be political, poetic, spiritual, religious, traditional, radical—do it! We chose an excerpt from the Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision during our ceremony, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the place. I’m so grateful to be married to this strong, sensitive, beautiful best friend of mine!

Wedding: Erica & Brittany

From Jane, the brides’ photographer: Brittany and Erica first met in May 2014. Brittany swept Erica off her feet when she sent her a message on her online dating profile about macaroni and cheese. When the two met in person at Ubon Thai restaurant in Wilmington, Delaware, they hit it off right away.

On September 4, 2015, in Bethany Beach, Delaware—just a few miles down the coast from where they shared their second date—Brittany proposed to Erica. Showing off her creative side, Brittany created a homemade picture book that told their love story and Erica read it as they enjoyed a picnic. A little over a year later, they are thrilled to be celebrating the start of this next chapter with beloved family and friends!

Erica and Britt are a couple full of joy and who bring everyone together in any setting. Their wedding was no exception. There wedding was aboard a boat that took the couple from engaged to married to dancing in the mist of a beautiful nighttime cruise!
