Wedding: Janice and Kristen

(So it’s kind of a good day when I plan as far ahead as dinner.  These two— 21 months, 13 bridesmaids (and a best man!), 1st lesbian wedding ever at Sugarloaf– wow. =) )

-S

From Janice & Kristen: We met just like two typical lesbians would meet in the small community of Portland, Maine…at a bar. We met at Flask Lounge in Portland on July 18th, 2009 and though it wasn’t love at first sight, it wasn’t far off. We became friends quickly, which turned into best friends, then partners, and before long we were engaged. We married on September 29th, 2012 – after planning our wedding down to the final details. It took us 21 months to plan, but we’d spend many nights up late talking about what we wanted and how to keep it on budget (Janice being the budget keeper and me being the big dreamer, or as we like to say “champagne taste on a beer budget”.) But, what we really wanted was a party – one that people would enjoy themselves.

Our first accomplishment was of the party atmosphere was the bridal party – 13 women and 1 best man. It could be a recipe for disaster – or party. I think we lucked out with party time. Our 2nd accomplishment of the party atmosphere was our location. Sugarloaf Mountain, known as the top ski and board spot for Maine and New Hampshire, we were married at the Sugarloaf Inn. Although it rained, we were able to step outside briefly for a few pictures with the fall foliage. We were also the first lesbian couple to wed at Sugarloaf.

I’ll never forget that day, but what helps me most, is our pictures. We had the most amazing photographer, Charity Smith of CSIS Photography. She captured our day, the joy, the laughter, and the emotion of that single day. I hope you enjoy them as well.

Wedding: Christine & Jamie

From Christine: First, I must say that I visited this website on a daily basis when we were planning our wedding. I loved looking at all the pictures and reading each couple’s story. It was so inspirational to see other couples like us getting married and creating ceremonies that were unique and special.

Our story: We met through friends at a party in Philly. For Jamie, it was love at first sight. It didn’t take long for me to become completely head over heels too, and within a few weeks, we were inseparable. In 2008, Jamie asked if she could keep me forever, and of course, I said YES! We waited until 2012, when civil unions were finally legalized in Delaware, to have our wedding. All of our summers together were spent in Rehoboth, so it seemed like the perfect place for us to have our wedding. We found a gorgeous venue to have a ceremony outside and a dance floor big enough to party the night away.
It was the most amazing day of our lives. Our friends and family had traveled from PA, NY, NJ, WA, and VA to celebrate with us. Our close friend, Tammy, had prepared for months and led us in a ceremony that we created ourselves. It was really important to show everyone that love is love no matter what, and I think we succeeded. Our ceremony has been described to us as the most heart-felt expression of love and commitment they have ever witnessed.

Looking back, there is absolutely nothing we would change. At one point during the reception, we looked around the room to see all types of couples on the dance floor. Love was all around us, and that it is all that we ever really need in life.

Wedding: Amanda & Megan

From Amanda and Megan: We fell in love the moment we met. After speaking online for two weeks, we met up and spent an entire month together before Amanda had to return overseas in the Navy. 3 months later we met up again and backpacked for a month in Europe together, where I (Megan) proposed in Paris Disneyland. Skip to 3 months after that, Amanda finally came back for shore duty in the U.S. I moved across country to join her. We got a house and a year later married. Now, we are trying for a baby!

Wedding: Chrystal and Rebecca

From Chrystal: After the excitement of the proposal began to subside it was replaced with a lot of new questions: What kind of service should we have? Should we go to a state where same-sex marriage is performed? or perhaps to Canada? We decided that perhaps the best way to show our own irreverence for the current status of marriage equality in Colorado was to just act like any other couple. And so we (Becca) created custom save-the-dates and invitation suites with a “civil disobedience” theme and continued on as though we were no different from any other couple. We settled on the AA barn in Grand Lake, Colorado as the perfect rustic, remote, high-altitude venue we’d always searched for. Becca and I met in the mountains, fell in love in the mountains, and finally, married in the mountains. Then we ate and drank and danced and played outside. And the mountains, along with our friends and family members, will remain forever witnesses of our dedication to love, live, help, grow, heal and learn with together for a lifetime. And someday maybe the rest of the Nation will too.

Wedding: Brooke and Monica

From Monica: I met Brooke when I was her cosmetology instructor in beauty school when we lived in Milwaukee WI. I immediately knew I was in trouble, as I fell in love.

We got engaged quickly and after a year we moved to Los Angeles. We finally set a date for our wedding a year and a half after moving to LA and started planning the most incredible experience of our lives. Not only was the wedding nothing less than perfect, the planning of our big day was amazing too. We decided that the wedding was to be very DIY and completely personal so our guests could share in our love but see and enjoy a wedding so very different than they had experienced. We wanted specialty touches and people to leave remembering our day!

The style we envisioned was very feminine and romantic. The day felt like this… Great Gatsby and Midsummers Night Dream crossed with a vintage yet modern feel. Soft lighting from candles, hundreds of crystals hanging in birch trees, mason jars, paper lanterns, feathers, and pale pink flowers. We released Chinese Lanterns into the sky after dark and danced our first dance with sparklers surrounding us. For our guests we had a warm fire, karaoke, a full dessert table with vintage candies-to-go, signature drinks including Popsicle Champagne Floats, Pink Grapefruit Margaritas and Upside Down Pineapple Wedding Cake.

When I look back on that day, it was the best day of my life. It was an unforgettable day with our families and friends. But even better than that was getting to have Brooke become my wife. I wish I could do it all again!
