Civil Partnership: Bonnie & Gail

This is one of the most endearing lesbian Civil Partnerships that I have ever had the pleasure of posting. Don’t those photos just make your heart sing.

I am turning into such a effing sap.

From Tim at This Modern Love: Bonnie and Gail tied the knot, quite literally, in a gorgeous ceremony in a 17th century Irish Castle. Beautiful vows, cute kids hunting for Easter eggs, DIY wildflowers in cans, tiny little cupcakes, so much warmth and laughter. Their ribbon tying ceremony in the evening was a real highlight, as friends and family wrote messages on ribbons and bound Bonnie and Gail’s hands together. We were extremely honoured to be part of such a wonderful day.

Wedding: Monica and Katrina

Happy New Year! 2011 was a dynamite year for us so 2012 will have to work hard… but I have high hopes. It is going to take a bit of time to ease back into my regular routine but I have some great posts coming your way (including a give-away from my favorite letterpress ladies).

Any-who, I thought this campy little lesbian wedding held at a century-old New York women’s camp would be a great way to get you smiling.

From photographer Catherine Hunsburger: Monica and Katrina’s weekend-long camp style wedding was a absolute delight. Friends and family gathered from around the globe for camp fires, soccer, karaoke, tamale making, boating, great food and a truly moving ceremony.

Wedding: Arley-Rose & Morgan

I have been not-so-patiently waiting to share the wedding of Arley-Rose and Morgan, the talent behind Ladyfingers Letterpress. Their wedding was a collaboration of friends and family that took place on Seven Arrows Farm in Massachusetts. Neon invitations, jeans, singing, tears of joy; how can you not be inspired by their lesbian love story.

She traveled with our family and friends to the farm while I drove with my mom and sisters in my mom’s car. Traditions? What traditions? We were all about creating new ones that day.

We walked with our families down the aisle in threes, led by our flower girl, Louise (the daughter of our good friends Shawn and Jill), followed by my cousin and ring-bearer Nick and my two sisters, then Morgans two brothers and sister. I walked down with my mom and dad on each arm, and Morgan followed with her two parents.

Hand in hand, Morgan and I floated on some kind of cloud as we stood in front of 130 of our closest and dearest family and friends. Alyn’s words were amazing and we held back tears as we looked into each others eyes and sent secret brain messages to each other “We are so lucky!” I could hear her think! I wonder if she could hear my thinking about the delicious dinner we were about to eat. Hmm. Anyway, Alyn shared her wisdom about creating “a cozy spot” – that middle space of shared sanctuary in a venn diagram of individualism where she urged us to never lose sight of ourselves as independents, but never stray too far from that cozy spot where we become more than individuals. She quoted the United Nations when they declared that “Marriage is a human right” and stirred up our inner activists as she quoted Sir William Robert Ferdinand Mount when he said “Marriage is a subversive act against authority.” At some parts of the reception I had forgotten that what we were doing was even illegal in some states, but quotes like that brought me back to the reality – and importance – of what we were doing.

I performed two songs, the first was a cover of “Be My Baby” by the Ronettes and the second song was a song I wrote for Morgan a few years ago called Balloon Heart.

Can’t you practically hear her singing just looking at that picture? Well, if you actually want to hear her sing and for more wedding details, check out their wedding blog.

Wedding: Lauren + Chrissie

When I hear Ann Arbor I usually think Go Blue but when I received the submission of Lauren and Chrissie’s sweet farmer’s market wedding I was immediately nostalgic for summer. This is the perfect all-American lesbian wedding (minus of course the fact that same-sex marriage isn’t legal in Michigan).

From Lauren: We planned the event ourselves, but had the help of our incredibly amazing and generous families (both given and chosen) throughout the process. One of our best friends “married” (not legal in Michigan) us, and by the end of it, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house! We really just wanted to celebrate our love and commitment with the people that mean the most to us, and still to this day feel so lucky to have gotten to do so.

Backyard Wedding: Kort + Stef

“Once upon a time… in a little gay bar in a little city, a girl met a girl who made her heart sing. It became true love. These are the images of two girls plus one kid saying ‘yes’ to forever and ever.”

Kort and Stef celebrated the beginning of their forever with their daughter and closest friends in a fairytale setting in their own backyard. The reception included a vegetarian picnic, a gorgeous little bar and the most amazing cake selection you can imagine. Kort said: Our day was cozy and romantic and everything we hoped for. I think our wedding was a budget DIY dream (< $3000). Our biggest expense was our tent (and of course it didn’t rain).

I don’t know if I’m even capable of dreaming that much beauty.

Kort and Stef’s wedding photos were taken by Ernie Rice and Jon Rowe, both friends of the brides.

… and an engagement photo because I couldn’t resist.

Wedding: Meghan + Emily

Emily and Meghan were same-sex married at McMenamins Cornelius Pass Roadhouse in Hillsboro Oregon. I love the robin’s egg blue and the bicycle built for two (of course). And the love! It just radiates from the photos.

Poor Emily was hit by a car a week before the wedding and had a huge brace on one of her legs for the whole night. Hence the “Just Married” wheel chair
