Wedding: Patricia & Arielle

It’s not every day that we get to feature a wedding with the SAME THEME as our blog!

From Patricia and Arielle’s photographers, Simply K Studios: Patricia and Arielle walked into our studio on June 26, 2015, the historic day that our Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage nationwide. I’m not sure I could have been more excited to hear their story and listen to their wedding plans! From that first day, I knew these two would have an amazing wedding, and we couldn’t be happier for them.

From Patricia: Eight years ago, I started my nursing career at a children’s hospital where I met Arielle who had already been a nurse for two years. If you ask her, it was love at first sight, but for me, I had just gotten out of a long relationship and was not ready to date again. For two years we became the best of friends. We were inseparable from day one, doing everything from baseball games to hiking/biking to cuddling up watching our favorite movies. I began to wonder why I couldn’t go a day without talking to or seeing —and finally I came to my senses and realized my feelings had grown into so much more than a friendship. I’ll never forget that evening when I told her how I felt and the smile on her face.

Six years have flown by, with ups and downs along the way, but we have always come out stronger than ever. We bought our dream house and dream dog and started our lives together. There were talks of getting married and days of ring shopping, but we knew we wanted to keep the proposals a surprise. I proposed to Arielle one night while we were playing Scrabble (her favorite game). She had no idea it was coming since we had spent all day doing yard work. I hid the ring in the letter bag while she wasn’t looking, and to my surprise it took almost the entire game for her to pull it out. Before I knew it, I was in front of her, asking her to spend her life with me. Lucky for me, she said  yes!

Arielle proposed to me two months later after I had gotten back from a trip to Minnesota. She had put together a sign of glow-in-the-dark stars with my family and cut a Harry Potter book (my favorite series to date) to the chapter “The Unbreakable Vow” for the ring box. When we lay in bed that night and the lights went out, “Marry Me” was glowing above us, and there she was with the book and ring. It was my idea of the perfect proposal.

Wedding planning wasn’t always easy, but our visions were on the same page. We chose a bicycle theme, which fit because of our love of the outdoors and biking, as well as our adventure tandem biking the Golden Gate Bridge. We found a few old bikes at a shop and restored them as decorations, as well as borrowing a vintage bike from our friend for pictures. Our personal touches were on every aspect of the day: from table settings with coffee in hand-stamped burlap bags as favors to the room lit up with tea lights and mason jar lights, and our Oreo dessert bar (my favorite dessert!). We wrote our entire ceremony (with a little help from the internet LOL), which was performed by one of our best friends, and when we exchanged vows, it was that fairytale moment, filled with excitement to start a new chapter in our lives together. Our wedding day was more than we could’ve hoped for, surrounded by everyone we love.

Wedding: Dalene & Victoria

From Dalene & Victoria: We’ve been together five years! We married six months ago, in October. It rained for the first time in ages in California, so we had to tarp our sunset wedding. But it was perfect! Our ceremony setup was unusually intimate, so it was as though we were close to our guests, who we asked not to stand when we proceeded down the long stairs to our altar. It was a perfect day celebrating our union with our 75 closest friends and family members!

Wedding: Erica & Brittany

From Jane, the brides’ photographer: Brittany and Erica first met in May 2014. Brittany swept Erica off her feet when she sent her a message on her online dating profile about macaroni and cheese. When the two met in person at Ubon Thai restaurant in Wilmington, Delaware, they hit it off right away.

On September 4, 2015, in Bethany Beach, Delaware—just a few miles down the coast from where they shared their second date—Brittany proposed to Erica. Showing off her creative side, Brittany created a homemade picture book that told their love story and Erica read it as they enjoyed a picnic. A little over a year later, they are thrilled to be celebrating the start of this next chapter with beloved family and friends!

Erica and Britt are a couple full of joy and who bring everyone together in any setting. Their wedding was no exception. There wedding was aboard a boat that took the couple from engaged to married to dancing in the mist of a beautiful nighttime cruise!

Wedding: Rebecca & Katie

From Rebecca & Katie, #TheLuckyDucketts: The night before we got married our venue called to tell us they had just lost power. Our region was experiencing widespread flooding, wind damage and power outages due to Hurricane Matthew. We took a deep breath and tried to keep it in perspective because although we were running into challenges (delayed vendor arrivals, guests canceling) we knew there were others affected by the storm much more severely than we were.

The morning arrived quickly. Our bride tribe worked at lightning speed to set everything up in order to be ready for our scheduled three o’clock ceremony. We walked out to Patti Griffin’s “Heavenly Day” and as we said our vows, the sun began to come out. One of our good friends performed our first dance song, “Slow Pony Home” by the Weepies. We made the day our own by adding in a Chambong and jumping on stage with the band. At one point a bouquet landed in a chandelier during the bouquet toss (but that wasn’t intentional!).

Delicious food, lots of wood accents and flowers, and quite possibly the best 80’s cover band in the country made our wedding day a dream, but being surrounded by our loving friends and family made it perfect. We had spectacular vendors and people helping us, and we’re beyond grateful for all of the love and support we received. It was truly the most special day of our lives and we’re SO glad to be finally married!

Wedding: Carrie & Claire

From Kelsey, Carrie and Claire’s photographer: I first met Carrie and Claire at the Freestate Wedding Expo. The show was wrapping up. I’m was standing there in my little wedding photography booth, wishing I had worn different shoes and wondering if my lipstick still looked ok. Then, from across the room, Claire’s eyes met mine. From that moment on we just knew, we knew it was meant to be. I was their wedding photographer and they would be my favorite clients. And we lived happily ever after.

Romantic, right?!

After Claire and I started talking we were literally bouncing up and down while Carrie casually watched the two of us in what can only be described as some seriously weird wedding excitement. I honestly think in some “twist of fate, universe aligning” way we were meant to meet that way. Now that the wedding is over, not only have I absolutely loved working with Carrie and Claire, I consider them my friends. And that makes me feel incredibly lucky.

Their love for each other is fierce and loyal, like an unbreakable bond and acceptance of one another. Watching them together makes me believe soul mates really do exist. Carrie and Claire, you inspire me. Someday I hope I know a love like the two of you have.

Wedding: Tina & Julie

From Holly Birch, the couple’s photographer: Tina and Julie planned a gorgeous event at the elegant Pear Tree Estate. They chose to seat their friends and family in a semi-circle for the ceremony, with the couple centered under a chandelier of greenery. Tina’s daughters were a large part of the day and ceremony, as well as the couple’s dog Peach.

Tina and Julie’s engagement session was featured on the blog last year. Congrats on a beautiful wedding!

Wedding: Amy & Amanda

From Amanda: Amy and I have lived all over the country and have friends and family everywhere. We chose to have our wedding in Illinois for a few different reasons: 1) we love Chicago 2) it was legal in Illinois when we started planning and 3) it’s centrally located for guests to fly /drive to. Since we don’t live in Chicago, we needed someone to help us chose vendors and help us through the planning process. Our wedding planner, Lisa Gordon, did a phenomenal job.

Once Amy and I started discussing wedding plans, we quickly came to the conclusion that we wanted something small with lots of charm, simple, and most of all fun. When Lisa sent us the information for Firehouse Chicago, we immediately fell in love with its charm and character. Amy has an outspoken love for spiral staircases and when we saw it lit up, we knew that this was the place for us. We wanted simple decorations and the Firehouse delivered that with their candle and light package. Another great thing about the Firehouse was that we used the courtyard for the ceremony then went directly inside to start kick off the reception. Having the ceremony and reception at the same place made the logistics a lot easier. We chose to have an open bar from the moment guests arrived until the end of the night, which made potentially socially awkward moments early in the night due to some of our guests never having met before less of an issue. The fact that Binny’s will take back any non-opened alcohol allowed us to over-purchase and not worry about running out of drinks.

Amy’s favorite part of the day (besides marrying me and the spiral staircase of course) was riding around downtown Chicago and stopping to take pictures with our bridal party and photographer Agnes Malorny. We have several favorite photos from the day, but our absolute favorite is the one of us standing on a ledge hanging out over the Lake Michigan with the skyline in the background. We had that one printed on 3ft x 1ft piece of metal which is now the focal point in our living room. My personal favorites were the matching converse shoes that we had made with our wedding date sewn into the side and the mini cupcakes that Dave’s Specialty Foods provided. They were SO good. I ate them the next morning and still talk about them today. We don’t have any wedding day horror stories because ALL of the vendors we chose to work with were wonderful. We didn’t have to worry about a single thing that day except enjoying the moment and sharing our love for each other with family and friends.
