Wedding: Tracy & Danielle

From Danielle: Tracy and I originally met about 4 years ago through mutual friend groups. At the time we both were seeing other people. We reconnected a year and a half ago and this time we were both single. It was our fast-thinking mutual friends who planned a group outing that allowed our friendship and relationship to grow. We went on a hike with our dogs on Memorial Day of 2015 and have been together ever since. January was not the original plan for our wedding, but November 8th changed everything. Our wedding was not an act of fear, but an act of love and solidarity. Being able to celebrate our love in front of family and friends was one of our favorite parts of the day. The day was so laid back and drama free that we would both do it all over again. Tracy and I planned a wedding in 52 days on a $1,500 budget. Our advice: do what makes you happy. We omitted being walked down the aisle, father/daughter dances, unity symbols, traditional ceremony scripts, etc., and our day was amazing and filled with so much love and joy.

Wedding: Ivy & Courtney

From the brides: We met while working for our college newspaper almost eight years ago. We’ve moved through cities and careers together, and now Ivy works for a nonprofit and Courtney works for the state House of Representatives. We got married on the evening of December 31st in our backyard because we thought 2016 needed something nice in it!*

*(For similar reasons, we’ve scheduled this post to go up at noon today.)

Friendship Ceremony: Vy & Sahaja

We’ve never posted about a friendship ceremony before, but when Vy & Sahaja got in touch, we couldn’t resist sharing their story!  Here’s what they had to say:

About us:

We are Vy (lesbian) & Sahaja (label-rejecting pansexual). We are from Moscow, Russia.
We are friends – nothing more and nothing less. Vy has been in a committed relationship for years. Sah is currently single. We met in early high school, and no matter our romantic statuses, we have been family for each other ever since (17 years and counting).

How did it start?

Vy: I’m a wild fan of On a Bicycle Built for Two. For years I’ve been dreaming about my own submission. But it took an unexpected turn: I realized that the first commitment ceremony I wanted was one with my best friend.

Sah: All of a sudden we saw how unreasonable it is that our society has developed no generally accepted way for those not romantically involved (friends, family members, etc.) to celebrate their love and commitment to each other.

What was the plan?

Sah: We decided to celebrate our love and say “thank you” for our past, “I trust you” for our present, and “we will” for our future in a friendship commitment ceremony in a beautiful old park in London. The plan was to say our friendship vows, exchange our friendship rings, and play our friendship songs for each other.

Vy: The preparation for the ceremony was a bonding miracle. Just one example: I will never forget how it turned out that we both chose the same thing to be engraved on our friendship commitment rings: it was “ebb & flood & ebb & flood” – in reference to Khalil Gebran’s The Prophet, on friendship: “And let your best be for your friend. If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also. For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill? Seek him always with hours to live.”

What was the best part?

Sah: The best part for me was how exactly this project of ours brought itself into life. No one to thank for it but ourselves. Simple perfection, as crystal clear and true as we dared to make and experience.

Vy: All the way down to the ceremony I had fits of commitment anxiety: my vows were so damn serious. But as I was standing in that solemn moment right in front of Sah, in the middle of London, against a crowd of frowning, disapproving-looking folks, all I was seeing were her eyes – it felt like I was looking in them for the first time so openly, so confidently. We were standing on top of the world, on the top of us.

And what now?

Sah: Now we’re rock solid in knowing that there always will be an ebb and a flood and an ebb and a flood for us – and we will stay together through it all.

Vy: The ceremony totally impacted us. Further up and further in.

Wedding: Erica & Brittany

From Jane, the brides’ photographer: Brittany and Erica first met in May 2014. Brittany swept Erica off her feet when she sent her a message on her online dating profile about macaroni and cheese. When the two met in person at Ubon Thai restaurant in Wilmington, Delaware, they hit it off right away.

On September 4, 2015, in Bethany Beach, Delaware—just a few miles down the coast from where they shared their second date—Brittany proposed to Erica. Showing off her creative side, Brittany created a homemade picture book that told their love story and Erica read it as they enjoyed a picnic. A little over a year later, they are thrilled to be celebrating the start of this next chapter with beloved family and friends!

Erica and Britt are a couple full of joy and who bring everyone together in any setting. Their wedding was no exception. There wedding was aboard a boat that took the couple from engaged to married to dancing in the mist of a beautiful nighttime cruise!

Wedding: Maureen & Morgan

From Morgan: Maureen and I met on OKCupid over four years ago. Even though we lived on either side of Los Angeles, we found out on our first date that we grew up less than a mile from each other, worked next door to each other in high school, and have mutual friends, among other coincidences. We were destined to cross paths and are thankful every day that we found one another.

We were able to plan the wedding of our dreams at one of our favorite places, the Ojai Valley Inn. We are so grateful for all of the amazing professionals that made our wedding so special and uniquely us, especially our incredible planner Michel of Michel B. Events, our florist Bree of RockRose Florals, and photographer Daniele of Lavender and Twine.

Surrounded by 130 of our close family and friends, we said our “I do’s” in the historic Wallace Neff courtyard with the rolling hills of the Ojai Valley as our backdrop. The ceremony was followed by cocktail hour in the terraced herb garden. The Get Down Boys provided a fun bluegrass music backdrop and were a hit with our guests. The reception dinner was held on the Orchard lawn below and was set up with extra long tables and strung with twinkle lights. DJ Wes of RedShoe L.A. got everyone on the dance floor following our first dance and joint father/daughter dance.

It was the most memorable weekend of our lives and we can’t wait to go back to relive it every year on our anniversary!

Wedding: Rebecca & Katie

From Rebecca & Katie, #TheLuckyDucketts: The night before we got married our venue called to tell us they had just lost power. Our region was experiencing widespread flooding, wind damage and power outages due to Hurricane Matthew. We took a deep breath and tried to keep it in perspective because although we were running into challenges (delayed vendor arrivals, guests canceling) we knew there were others affected by the storm much more severely than we were.

The morning arrived quickly. Our bride tribe worked at lightning speed to set everything up in order to be ready for our scheduled three o’clock ceremony. We walked out to Patti Griffin’s “Heavenly Day” and as we said our vows, the sun began to come out. One of our good friends performed our first dance song, “Slow Pony Home” by the Weepies. We made the day our own by adding in a Chambong and jumping on stage with the band. At one point a bouquet landed in a chandelier during the bouquet toss (but that wasn’t intentional!).

Delicious food, lots of wood accents and flowers, and quite possibly the best 80’s cover band in the country made our wedding day a dream, but being surrounded by our loving friends and family made it perfect. We had spectacular vendors and people helping us, and we’re beyond grateful for all of the love and support we received. It was truly the most special day of our lives and we’re SO glad to be finally married!

Wedding: Carrie & Claire

From Kelsey, Carrie and Claire’s photographer: I first met Carrie and Claire at the Freestate Wedding Expo. The show was wrapping up. I’m was standing there in my little wedding photography booth, wishing I had worn different shoes and wondering if my lipstick still looked ok. Then, from across the room, Claire’s eyes met mine. From that moment on we just knew, we knew it was meant to be. I was their wedding photographer and they would be my favorite clients. And we lived happily ever after.

Romantic, right?!

After Claire and I started talking we were literally bouncing up and down while Carrie casually watched the two of us in what can only be described as some seriously weird wedding excitement. I honestly think in some “twist of fate, universe aligning” way we were meant to meet that way. Now that the wedding is over, not only have I absolutely loved working with Carrie and Claire, I consider them my friends. And that makes me feel incredibly lucky.

Their love for each other is fierce and loyal, like an unbreakable bond and acceptance of one another. Watching them together makes me believe soul mates really do exist. Carrie and Claire, you inspire me. Someday I hope I know a love like the two of you have.
