Wedding: Rebecca & Katie

From Rebecca & Katie, #TheLuckyDucketts: The night before we got married our venue called to tell us they had just lost power. Our region was experiencing widespread flooding, wind damage and power outages due to Hurricane Matthew. We took a deep breath and tried to keep it in perspective because although we were running into challenges (delayed vendor arrivals, guests canceling) we knew there were others affected by the storm much more severely than we were.

The morning arrived quickly. Our bride tribe worked at lightning speed to set everything up in order to be ready for our scheduled three o’clock ceremony. We walked out to Patti Griffin’s “Heavenly Day” and as we said our vows, the sun began to come out. One of our good friends performed our first dance song, “Slow Pony Home” by the Weepies. We made the day our own by adding in a Chambong and jumping on stage with the band. At one point a bouquet landed in a chandelier during the bouquet toss (but that wasn’t intentional!).

Delicious food, lots of wood accents and flowers, and quite possibly the best 80’s cover band in the country made our wedding day a dream, but being surrounded by our loving friends and family made it perfect. We had spectacular vendors and people helping us, and we’re beyond grateful for all of the love and support we received. It was truly the most special day of our lives and we’re SO glad to be finally married!

Wedding: Brigid & Cara

From Aimee, Brigid and Cara’s photographer: Hold on to your socks, because this is a wedding that I am so excited to share. Brigid + Cara are kind, funny, caring, down-to-earth, and generally delightful human beings. I’m so proud to have been a part of their big day! They met through a mutual friend (Anya — one of their bridesmaids), and when you meet them, you can see instantly why Anya thought to introduce them. They’re simply perfect for each other! Cara’s hilarious, fun-loving personality perfectly complements Brigid’s dry, quiet wit. Together, they’re amazing. Though they reached out to me about their wedding from their digs in southern California, they flew east to DC for their engagement session, and by the time the wedding rolled around in March, they’d made DC their new forever-home. I’ll let Cara take it from here, in her own words…

From Cara: I’m the bride in the super cool custom suit from Kipper Clothiers. My gorgeous wife Brigid and I met in April 2013 through Brigid’s best friend (and my college friend and running buddy) Anya while Brigid was on a visit to DC. We hit it off big time and decided to date.

For a year we flew back and forth from my home in DC to Brigid’s home in Southern California. I joined Brigid in California via an amazing cross-country road trip together the following year and we were engaged a few weeks shy of our second anniversary. I proposed at the Owen’s Aviary at the San Diego Zoo, one of our absolute favorite spots. Brigid returned the favor a few weeks later on our actual anniversary by taking me on a tour of San Diego area breweries and popping the question at our favorite OC area restaurant.

We planned most of our wedding from California and we knew that everything would turn out beautifully with the help of our excellent wedding team. We made the decision to move back to DC to be closer to family and to establish our forever home together a few months before the wedding. The actual move was two weeks before our wedding, and let me tell you, moving cross-country via another amazing road trip in that close proximity to our wedding was grueling. We survived though and made it to DC safely.

Two weeks exactly after moving back, we got married at the gorgeous Barns at Wolf Trap. The Barns are a concert venue close to Washington, DC. The lighting, shadows, beautiful hardwood floors and excellent acoustics made our venue perfect for us. The Barns looked magical on our wedding day thanks in huge part to Haley, our wonderful florist and coordinator.

Marrying my best friend was the absolute best part of the day, however. Our ceremony was perfect for us and captured our love for each other. Brigid looked absolutely fantastic in her Jenny Yoo gown and birdcage veil. We had delicious food, excellent local beer, a table full of yummy desserts from one of our favorite local bakeries, and a dance party that included seriously everyone at the wedding from our 95 year old neighbor to our 8 month old nephew. The night concluded with an after-party consisting of late night drinks and delivery pizza at our hotel and it was absolutely perfect. Being married to one another has been a wonderful gift, and we are so excited to start our new life together.

Also, make sure to check out the seating chart and decorations designed by Brigid (and peruse her website for more photos)!

From Amber, Chelsea & Katie’s photographer: Chelsea and Katie’s engagement session was a blast. The two met a couple of years ago through mutual friends, and have been together ever since. Engagement: Terica & Sonya

From Terica: Sonya and I met on Match.com. We’ve been growing together for almost 3 years and are so excited about our upcoming marriage/wedding. She is the one I envision experiencing my future with and I’m so ready! Our photo shoot highlighted our love for Richmond. Sonya is a Virginia native; but I’m a transplant. Either way, it’s the home for us and many other LGBT couples. Truly now, Virginia is for Lovers!

Wedding: Ahuva & Rachel

From Ahuva and Rachel’s photographerAhuva & Rachel are a very sweet couple, genuine with their affection and visibly in love! They made photography a priority on their wedding day, which meant creating time to visit the Meadowlark Botanical Gardens and bringing along their musical instruments, a vital part of their love story.

Rachel & Ahuva went with a simple and intimate wedding day, which really allowed their unique details to stand out: from the rainbow cupcakes to the gorgeous handcrafted ketubah, everything was just right. The intimate circle of family and friends filled the room with love, and it was truly special to witness!

Engagement: Kirsten & Emily

From Kirsten & Emily’s photographerEmily surprised her fiancée Kirsten with an engagement photo session! I followed them around Maymont Park in Richmond, VA for a few minutes, and Emily re-proposed at the place where she had originally planned to do so. I popped out with my camera shortly after, and we spent our time wandering Carytown in Richmond, a city that holds special meaning for this Virginia Beach couple! Kirsten is obsessed with Starbucks, so we made sure the session included a stop for coffee. The props were also a surprise made by Emily for the shoot!

Engagement: Becky & Bonnie

From Becky: We met in the aisles of Trader Joe’s, where all true love begins… actually Bonnie was training me on my first day on the job as a grocer. We both were working part-time at the store while finishing second degrees. It took us a few months and a few mix CDs to muster up the courage to pursue something-more-than-friends outside of work, but I finally won Bonnie over with a homemade vegan pizza after one of her long runs (she was training for a marathon at the time). Three years later, we’re so excited to be planning our wedding, a cross-country move, and a future together.

We took engagement photos in Richmond, Virginia, a few hours away from where we live – we loved exploring the city and having fun with photographer extraordinaire, Shawnee Custalow.
