Wedding: Maureen & Morgan

From Morgan: Maureen and I met on OKCupid over four years ago. Even though we lived on either side of Los Angeles, we found out on our first date that we grew up less than a mile from each other, worked next door to each other in high school, and have mutual friends, among other coincidences. We were destined to cross paths and are thankful every day that we found one another.

We were able to plan the wedding of our dreams at one of our favorite places, the Ojai Valley Inn. We are so grateful for all of the amazing professionals that made our wedding so special and uniquely us, especially our incredible planner Michel of Michel B. Events, our florist Bree of RockRose Florals, and photographer Daniele of Lavender and Twine.

Surrounded by 130 of our close family and friends, we said our “I do’s” in the historic Wallace Neff courtyard with the rolling hills of the Ojai Valley as our backdrop. The ceremony was followed by cocktail hour in the terraced herb garden. The Get Down Boys provided a fun bluegrass music backdrop and were a hit with our guests. The reception dinner was held on the Orchard lawn below and was set up with extra long tables and strung with twinkle lights. DJ Wes of RedShoe L.A. got everyone on the dance floor following our first dance and joint father/daughter dance.

It was the most memorable weekend of our lives and we can’t wait to go back to relive it every year on our anniversary!

Wedding: Trineice & Brigid

From Rebecca, Trineice & Brigid’s wedding planner & designer: When I first met Trineice and Brigid, I knew instantly that I wanted to work with them. Not only was I thrilled that they were planning their wedding in Oakland, California (my home turf!) and wanted to show off all the beauty and special spaces tucked away in this special town, but I was also really drawn to their energy and enthusiasm. I *LOVED* that they met while dancing at SF Pride, and knew that dancing — and really the pure joy that just glowed between these two — would be at the heart of the vision for their wedding. Their venue, the Dunsmuir Hellman Historic Estate, is a melding pot of historic elegance set amid gorgeous, open grounds. The brides wanted to play off of that vibe, combining the laid back energy of spending a summer day at the park with an elegant outdoor cocktail hour and seated dinner. And of course, ending the night with an epic dance party was a must!!

Wedding(s!): Erica & Alex (Part 2)

From Erica: Six months after our ceremony in England, we flew out to California for our very country wedding in my hometown in Northern California. This time we had a full bridal party with friends from high school and college and my best friend wrote and performed our commitment ceremony (including a homily that brought us to tears!). The whole day was hosted as the local county fair grounds, so we camped up the country theme! Guests arrived to fresh apple cider and sweet breads (pumpkin, apple & cinnamon) while a local celtic band played on hay bales. Our ceremony was in a little tucked-away garden. We included a hand-binding ceremony and requested that our parents, bridal party, and guests sign a marriage certificate as our ‘legal’ acts. The evening consisted of cocktails, a tri-tip BBQ buffet, speeches, and copious amounts of dancing to cheesy pop music. The room was decorated with autumnal fabrics in embroidery hoops, English bunting, Christmas lights, and red accents. Our table decorations/favours were homemade jars of jams, tomatoes, salsa, beets—anything red!—made and decorated by our family and friends! As we had over 120 people there for the day, family and friends were also massive in helping set-up and clear-up. We will be forever grateful for all who chipped in to help create both weddings!

We honeymooned the following year in Dubrovnik, Croatia, and continue to make our home in London, England. We were thought we were ‘done’ getting married but then SCOTUS and the UK parliament started to make moves towards marriage equality in 2014 and we got excited that we might actually be able to be MARRIED (and legally recognized!!) in both countries…but that’s a different post!

Engagement: Alisa & Cindy

From Alisa: Five years ago, I saw Cindy’s profile on OK Cupid and knew she was the one for me. Yet I hesitated to contact her; I also felt she was “out of my league.” Then in early 2011, I was at a monthly women’s cocktail party at the Terrace Room in Oakland, when a woman sitting at the bar hollered at me to come over and talk to her. I was astonished to see it was her! We talked, but she didn’t get my number. Five months later, we ran into each other at a music festival and discovered we had some mutual friends. After dancing all afternoon, I slipped my number to her friend to give to her. We dated a few months, but the timing wasn’t right. Fast forward to February 2015. We ran into each other at the same cocktail party, reunited, and spent the last year traveling, getting reacquainted, and falling in love.

On March 4th, Cindy gave me the surprise of a lifetime. I thought she was in Tahoe skiing, but she was actually scheming with our friends to get me to the Lake Chalet restaurant for a surprise proposal. I and five of our friends had just been served wine and appetizers when the waiter placed a Macy’s business card in front of me. I recognized it at once; I had given it to Cindy months before when I’d been on a “girls’ day out” and tried on rings with friends at Walnut Creek Macy’s just for fun. I’d written, “This is the one” on the card, knowing that some day she would pop the question, and would want an idea of what I liked. Seeing the card appear on my plate, I got very confused! Everything became slow motion. Then I felt a tap on my shoulder. I looked up to see more friends standing around our table, tears in their eyes and huge smiles on their faces. As I continued turning, in utter confusion, there was Cindy holding a long-stemmed rose and a little black box. I kept repeating, “But you’re not here. But you’re skiing. But you’re not here!” She was supposed to be in Tahoe! We had first fallen in love watching JP and Ashley’s season of The Bachelor and the “rose” had become our symbol. She asked me, “Alisa, will you accept this rose?” At this point, I was crying and shaking. Then she took my hands in hers and said she never wanted to spend another day without me. Next, she got on bended knee, presented me with a gorgeous sparkling diamond ring, and asked me to marry her. I was still speechless when a guy from the back of the very crowded, cheering, clapping restaurant yelled, “Say yes, already!” So I did and we ended in tears and laughter. It was the best night of my life—she really pulled it off to make me the happiest girl in the world, and being surrounded by our friends and so much love just made it all the better.

Wedding: Emily & Molly

From Emily and Molly: We met in Portland, Oregon over 8 years ago on Friday the 13th and the rest is history… with a lot of traveling, bicycle rides, rain storms, late night cocktails, queer dance parties, cats, cooking, movies, and more exploration in between! We moved to San Diego a few years ago to be closer to Molly’s family, the sunshine and the ocean. When we initially talked about getting married we just wanted one big party to bring all of our friends and families together for a night of good cocktails and dancing. A few days before our engagement party, we decided to surprise everyone and get married at the engagement!! It was such a lovely evening with a ton of laughs, tears, and hugs. We are so happy and lucky to have such incredible people in our lives. Check out mollyheartsemily.com for more of our story and pictures from the wedding. XO.

Engagement: Mckenzie & Tori

From Mckenzie: Tori and I met for the first time in March of 2012 at a monthly queer women’s dance party in Washington, DC called She.Rex. We connected over music (she’s a bass player and I’m a singer), and had an amazing time playing together in a rock band for the next year and a half before finally starting to date. Once we got together, we talked a lot about the future -marriage, kids, where we might live – but we always skipped over the getting engaged part. I decided it was time to act, so I got some advice from Tori’s sister and brother-in-law, and got to planning!

Shortly after Tori and I had started dating, we went on a trip to San Francisco. It was there that I remember really falling hard for Tori and found out later that she had felt the same way. Because this place was so special to us, I knew I had to do the proposal there, but how would I get her there, especially without it becoming suspicious? Well, luckily enough, a month or so prior to my planning, Tori and I had booked flights to Oregon to visit my family in late August. This was the solution: I could change the flights to fly into San Francisco instead, and she would not have to know! I barely told anyone that the proposal was coming, so it would be a surprise. The day of the flight to ‘Oregon’ came, and I was out-of-my-mind nervous. I thought I had it well-planned down to the last detail, so all I could do was go with it. I was able to get her all the way to Oakland without any suspicion. When we got there I was like, ‘So we’re not actually changing planes here; we’re staying here in San Fran for the day!’

We had a lovely day in San Francisco, where we had a scrumptious lunch at one of the best taco places in town, shopped around the Mission District, and relaxed in the sun at Dolores Park. Later that evening, we hopped in an Uber to head to ‘dinner,’ and she had no idea where we were going. The driver took us through Golden Gate Park, which was so lovely. As we exited the park, we came upon Ocean Beach. When Tori figured out where we were, that was the first time she got suspicious about what was happening. We walked around on the beach collecting rocks and shells for a bit while the two of us were trying not to act super nervous.

Our photographer Danielle was on the beach with us catching candids, and Tori had no idea she was there; she looked like she was just out there on her own capturing the sunset. Danielle’s cue to know I was about to propose was when Tori and I compared our seashell findings. This was the only trip-up! There were basically no shells on the beach that day. Tori thought it was pretty weird that I was so insistent on finding shells when there weren’t really any to be found, but she was so nervous with hopeful anticipation that she just went with it and channeled her nerves and excitement into the task. I was so grateful for this!

We found a few shells, and we stopped on the beach to compare them and pick our favorites. I had placed the ring under the stack of shells in my hand, so when I got to the bottom of the stack, I said, ‘Okay, I have one more,’ and I opened up my hands with the ring sitting there and asked her to marry me. She said ‘Yes!’ And Danielle captured the moment beautifully. It was perfect.

We had our moment, and then Danielle came over and we told Tori what was going on. She was in disbelief. We had a whole engagement photoshoot right after the proposal had occurred. Danielle was so amazing at calming us down and making us not look completely weird (because of course we were feeling super giddy and ridiculous at this point). After the shoot, Tori and I went to the most delicious sushi dinner and just soaked up the loveliness of it all together.

The next morning, we had a way-too-early flight to Oregon, but we made it! We then got to make the big announcement to my family in person, which was super cool, and later that week the pictures from Flytographer got to us, just in time for us to put them up on Facebook and share the experience with everyone! The pictures that Danielle took were exactly what we had wanted, and we feel so grateful to have them as a memento of this special day.
