Wedding: Tracy & Danielle

From Danielle: Tracy and I originally met about 4 years ago through mutual friend groups. At the time we both were seeing other people. We reconnected a year and a half ago and this time we were both single. It was our fast-thinking mutual friends who planned a group outing that allowed our friendship and relationship to grow. We went on a hike with our dogs on Memorial Day of 2015 and have been together ever since. January was not the original plan for our wedding, but November 8th changed everything. Our wedding was not an act of fear, but an act of love and solidarity. Being able to celebrate our love in front of family and friends was one of our favorite parts of the day. The day was so laid back and drama free that we would both do it all over again. Tracy and I planned a wedding in 52 days on a $1,500 budget. Our advice: do what makes you happy. We omitted being walked down the aisle, father/daughter dances, unity symbols, traditional ceremony scripts, etc., and our day was amazing and filled with so much love and joy.

Wedding: Julie & Jennifer

From Julie and Jennifer: When planning our wedding we searched this site looking for ideas… and couples like us. The only thing we knew for certain: there would be no dresses!

If we had a theme it would be trees, as they are meaningful to us. Our favors were made from dogwood coins and a wood burner. Our invitations and guestbook incorporated trees, as did our wedding rings (both made with wood). We used recycled glass jars painted with alcohol inks and then filled them with simple flowers for our centerpieces. We poured our time, energy and hearts into doing everything we could ourselves (with the help of our kiddos).

The day began at Malcolm Martin Memorial Park in East St. Louis, Illinois, as gay marriage was not quite legal in Missouri yet. It was a beautiful little service with just Jennifer, myself, the kids and our pastor… and about a dozen strangers who were there enjoying the park (all accepting and giving applause and congratulations).

After that, we headed to Tower Grove Park to take our photos, then on to our church, Compton Heights Christian Church, for our real ceremony. Our ceremony was perfect – we wrote most of the service and our vows. Jennifer read me my favorite Mary Oliver poem and I sang one of her favorite songs to her. We laughed, cried, and I had the CHEESIEST smile all day.

After our ceremony we headed to the fellowship hall of our church to enjoy a huge meal that was set up by awesome friends (Hodaks, Blueberry Hill, and self-catered from Schnucks). We had a karaoke machine that everyone enjoyed and we were just surrounded by friends, family, church, love and support. Could not have had a better day!

We left the following day for our honeymoon in Eureka Springs, Arkansas…..and by the time we returned our marriage was legally recognized in Missouri. Yeah! Thank you for letting us share our day with you!

Engagement: Scout & Lauren

From Scout and Lauren: We met in 2010 on a summer night. After nearly four years of bonding together over a mutual love of Harmony Korine films, antique malls, and a 1-year long engagement, we are ecstatic to be finally & officially getting married at Molasses Books in Brooklyn! Britt Ernst documented us at our home, 7 weeks before the wedding. The photographs capture so much warmth & love… and most importantly, they capture us. We are incredibly pleased with the results, and cannot wait to board our flight to Brooklyn.

St. Louis Wedding: BrandiWyne + Melissa

Sweet Midwest lesbian wedding and a good reminder for me to be grateful to live in a state that has legalized and accepts same-sex marriage (I rarely stumble over referencing Angela as my wife). Photos sent over by Heather and Aaron at Hawes Photography.

Heather: If we’ve ever met at a bridal show there’s a 99% chance that I don’t remember speaking to you. It’s such a crazy atmosphere that it’s hard to pin down names with faces with wedding dates.

And then there is BrandiWyne and Melissa.

I remember speaking to them in the Overland Park Convention Center and noting that they both had bride stickers on, yet seemed like a couple. I didn’t think much of it, but I did remember them when sometime during the second fashion show when the vendor booths get really, really slow they reappeared and asked sweetly (and almost heartbreakingly) if we would shoot a same sex marriage. Our “Of course! We can’t believe we haven’t shot one yet! We’d love to!” was not the kind of response they’d received at other booths (which is the heartbreaking part). It’s shocking to me that someone wouldn’t want to shoot these two bubbly, adventurous women, but their loss was truly our gain.

BrandiWyne and Melissa’s wedding day was unique in a lot of ways (hello Wednesday evening affair with gobs of spirited bridesmaids and some awesome photography time in a super cool abandoned building). But at the very core it was still about witnessing and photographing two unique people who love each other and are committing to spend their lives together. And who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?
