Wedding: Emma & Katie

Emma and Katie’s Georgia wedding was our kind of day: featuring some top-notch dancing, donuts, AND cake. Watch their video here, and be prepared to cry. Their vows are pretty amazing. As for their message on the blog, they kept it simple.

From the bride & broom: It was the best day of our lives and the most fun we’ve ever had (and we have a lot of fun)!

Engagement: Emma & Katie

For your Monday—what has to be one of the funniest first meeting descriptions we’ve ever published. Congrats, Katie & Emma!

From the couple: One day Emma was most likely watching 30 Rock and eating ice cream in bed—because she’s a damn adult and can do what she pleases—when a little OKCupid notification popped up: “You probably have the best about me profile ever.” Responding positively to compliments of any kind, noting that Katie’s height was in her desired range, and agreeing that her profile was indeed “the best” so at least this girl must have good judgment, Emma responded.

They made plans to get slushies in the park on their lunch break. It was hot out. Emma pretended it was fine. Katie’s teeth turned blue. Emma got sunburned through her sweater. It was love.

Engagement: Caitlin & Laura

From Caitlin: Laura and I met in Athens, GA in 2011 when she was just starting college and I was starting nursing school. Over a common passion for food, beer, adventure, and the Georgia Bulldogs, we fell in love. This summer, we traveled to Denver to run our first marathon and explore the national parks when I proposed to Laura. With our feet in a river and tears in our eyes, she said yes! We can’t wait to get married next June in front of our family and friends in the north Georgia mountains.

Engagement: Anna & Sarah

It may not be a bicycle built for two, but we still can’t resist a shoot with a bicycle!

From Tracy and Mark, Anna & Sarah’s photographers: We met Anna & Sarah at a bridal show, and had so much fun hanging out with them and their pups at the park for their engagement session. With a blanket and a bicycle, the rest fell in to place…

Wedding: Lindsay & Jamie

From Lindsay & Jamie’s wedding planner, Sarah Day: Lindsay and Jamie got me involved after they had stared the planning process on their own and quickly became overwhelmed with not only the details but with the challenges of planning a same-sex wedding. They were, unfortunately, disappointed to discover that many vendors in the area were not very accepting of their marriage. So we tackled one vendor at a time, looking for vendors who not only captured the look and feel of what the brides wanted, but who also were open to and excited about working on a same-sex wedding. I was truly honored by the group of event professionals that we ultimately assembled to bring to life the vision that Lindsay had for her southern wedding. We had our final walk-through at the venue the same week the Supreme Court ruled to legalize same-sex weddings and we were all in tears as we walked through the property and knew that all our hard work was now not just producing a beautiful wedding but a wedding that would be recognized in all 50 states!

Weather can always a be tricky thing to deal with when planning an outdoor wedding. Georgia was under a particularly challenging deluge of rain this fall, but we were not going to let it slow us down. That morning I ran out and scoured the countryside (literally) for matching rain boots for the bridesmaids and as many umbrellas as I could find. We didn’t want to miss any photo opportunities as we were tromping through the mud! Thankfully we also had an incredible photography team that was in the trenches with us and didn’t miss a beat.

From Lindsay: My family is from up north (Pennsylvania, mostly), so we really wanted to throw them a “southern affair” when they visited Georgia. Our welcome bags at the hotel were filled with items from Georgia-based companies, and the favors incorporated Georgia (and my home state of Virginia). The food and decor was also very southern. So we had LEGAL lesbian wedding in small town Georgia. Pretty damn cool if you ask me!

Lindsay & Jamie’s wedding won two Belief IWP Awards— in the categories of Wedding Concept and Special Photo!

Wedding: Cath & Laura

From Cindy and Sharon, Cath & Laura’s photographers: Cath and Laura met on Match.com about 15 months ago. Cath was about ready to give up on online dating services, but had not given up yet. Their first date was a 9 a.m. yoga class on a Sunday morning. After class they had lunch together and talked for two or three hours.

The wedding was definitely spontaneous. Laura was listening to the radio and heard about the Supreme Court decision. She called Cath to tell her about it. The two had been tossing around the idea of marriage, but had made no plans. When Cath heard that there was going to be a mass wedding in downtown Atlanta that day, she asked Laura if she wanted to get married right then and there. So the proposal took place over the phone. Laura was hesitant at first, because she wanted her whole family to be able to share in the joy. So Cath told Laura to call her parents to see if they could make it. When they found out Laura’s parents were willing to drive from Conyers to come, Cath and Laura decided to head to the courthouse. They also called and invited a few friends and co-workers.

Everything happened so quickly, they did not have time to buy rings, so they borrowed rings from their friends, Hilary and Katie. After getting married by a judge during the mass wedding, they headed to the courthouse steps where they were married by Unitarian Universalist minister Anthony Makar.

Love Shoot: Rachel & Kim

One day, Rachel decided she needed some LGBT friends because she somehow managed to make it out of music school without any (how that happened, she doesn’t really know). On that same day, Kim was bored. Both Rachel and Kim saw an advertisement for an online penpal community and signed up. Rachel messaged Kim and they began writing and mailing letters.

Letters evolved to include email, text messages, and lots and lots of Skype (for 8 hours until 6am sometimes when neither Rachel nor Kim could keep her eyes open any more). Rachel developed a ginormous crush on Kim because Kim was amazing and smart and funny and she serenaded her with “Over the Moon” from Rent once over Skype.

So one day Rachel told Kim that she liked her and, lucky for Rachel, Kim felt the same way. It was crazy and complicated and they weren’t on the same continent for most of the first nine months of their relationship (because Kim was studying abroad in Japan for some of the time and Rachel was traveling all over Europe, the US, and Canada for work) but they made it work.

They met in person on Valentine’s Day in 2011, Rachel moved to Kim’s state (to the apartment above her, actually) and Kim hasn’t been able to get rid of her ever since.
