Engagement: Sierra & Mallory

From Kaycee, Sierra & Mallory’s photographer: Sierra contacted me a month or so ago asking if I would be interested in shooting their proposal! I just about fell out of my chair!!! I have always, always wanted to photograph a proposal!! Sierra had just moved to Alberta so she could be with Mallory, and I learned more about their relationship over the phone. When I found out Sierra was a massage therapist, I booked an appointment (and consultation combo of course). After the massage, we walked around for over an hour, looking, scheming and planning it right down to the last detail! It was going to be the ultimate surprise, as Sierra said to me– “she will never see this coming!”. Here is their proposal story:

First Picture
This was the first pose in!! I was so nervous!! I had on my ridiculously thick Roots hoodie with the ring box in the pocket. I’m sure it wasn’t noticeable, but I swear I had a sign on me that said LOOK AT THE SQUARE SHAPED BUMP IN MY POCKET!! I felt like that ringbox in my pocket was like a siren going off constantly.. or that I or that it was going to burn a hole through the pocket and wreck the surprise.. I was sweatin’ about it!! Haha!

Back to Back
This was our second pose in– Sierra wanted the proposal done right off the bat so she wouldn’t have to stress about it!! We planned  for me to wear a sweater on the day of the shoot, keep the ring box in my hoodie, get them into this pose and then “fix Sierra’s hair”. When I went up to Sierra, I handed her the ring box with my offhand so Mallory wouldn’t see it. For these 2 photos, Mallory has NO clue what is going on behind her!! Which is SO exciting!! (Ps Kaycee at this moment takes a big.WHEW, I DID IT AND DIDN’T WRECK THE SURPRISE) lol!

FirstSecondThird

After our “outside photoshoot” portion, Sierra and I were relieved that we had pulled it off!! The three of us chatted as we walked back into the house and Sierra remarked, “I’m so glad I got to you first. I was so worried that you would have got a ring and proposed first!” Mallory laughed with us and shrugged it off, all smiles… LITTLE DID WE KNOW…..

Second Proposal
THAT MALLORY HAD BOUGHT A RING AND WAS PLANNING ON PROPOSING DURING THE PHOTOSHOOT!!!!!!  I had no idea and didn’t realize that Mallory had disappeared once we got into the house.. Sierra and I were chatting away when Mallory came out of the bedroom with a box in her hand .. I turned around and Mallory was down on one knee proposing to Sierra!!!! Oh my gosh!!! There was a ton of joy in this room!!

Final

Mallory had planned on proposing during the photoshoot and was planning on doing it during the in-the-house portion!! So it was a DOUBLE proposal!!

Wedding: Mariah & Natacha

From Mariah: Our wedding day was very special for many reasons. A big one was the location. We were fortunate enough to get married at Meech Lake, in the backyard of my childhood home, right on the water. This really added to the intimate outdoors/nature theme that we wanted. My partner and I were able to get away for a few minutes after the ceremony by escaping in a canoe. Being able to have a few private moments floating in the middle of the lake to just reflect on our union was priceless. We got engaged on a canoe trip, so it was fitting that there was a canoe on our wedding day.

We had unbelievable support from our family and friends who helped us with many DIY projects that added a very warm and personal touch to our setting. My brothers hiked into the woods to find birch logs and together built our archway that we were married under. It was a labour of love. We decided to have an open bar. In the eyes of our guests, best decision ever. We still hear about it! We were very fortunate to have found vendors and services with people who really took the time to hear what we wanted and who delivered exactly what we hoped for—from our awesome DJ who kept the party going late into the night to our awesome photographers who climbed onto the roof of the house to get that perfect group shot. It made the day run smoothly and provided us with everlasting memories.

Elopement: Kimberly & Hayley

From Kimberly: Hayley and I met online 6 years ago, and although I’m from Connecticut, USA and Hayley is from the UK, we’ve kept things going strong and gained a love of travel. When we were planning our wedding we knew we couldn’t have it in America or the UK because one set of our families wouldn’t be able attend. So we decided to make it all about us and elope in Banff, Canada. On the day of our wedding we made our way out with our commissioners and photographer to frozen Lake Minnewanka to say our vows. Afterwards we went for afternoon tea and then later to fondue. When Billy Idol’s “White Wedding” came on the radio, we knew it was meant to be.

Sponsored Post: Focus Photography

A Bicycle Built for Two is running a series featuring some of our sponsoring photographers! Here’s our latest:

Today, we’d like to introduce you to FocusPhotography, Toronto wedding photographer extraordinaire! The Focus team specializes in engagements, weddings, and videography, and when they reached out to us about being featured on the site, we were excited to talk to their founder, Lee, about some of his favorite parts of his work.

A80A5338

Tell us your story! How did you come to be a photographer?

I’ve always had a passion for photography since I was in school.

What are a few adjectives you would use to describe your style?

Candid and authentic.

Tell us about a memorable moment from one of your shoots.

The craziest thing that ever happened was at a wedding when the couple surprised each other with performances– and it turned out they were dancing to the same song!

What’s your favorite song to dance to at a wedding?

Michael Jackson’s “Love Never Felt So Good”

A80A4163

Besides photography, how do you like to spend your time?

I am so busy with Focus that I even on Christmas, I go into the studio to edit some photos!

Why are you excited to work with LBTQ couples?

We are excited about working with LGBTQ couples because it’s sad that we still live in a society when people inquiring with us feel like they have to ask, “Are you guys okay with shooting gay weddings?”

_MG_8787

What do you envision for *your* wedding? Any must-haves?

For me, a must-have is really personal vows.

What else would you like readers to know about you?

We live for every couple’s journey. All of us care about our clients as if they were our friends– and everyone in the studio shares the same philosophy as I do, or else I wouldn’t hire them.

If you’re looking for a photobooth in the Toronto area…

Check out Focus’s sister company, Focusbooth: Toronto wedding photobooth rental is their jam! (It looks like they’ve got a great selection of novelty props, too.)

We’d like to thank FocusPhotography for sharing their story and  images– and for their sponsorship of A Bicycle Built for Two!

If you’re a photographer, planner, or other wedding vendor interested in being featured in a sponsored post, drop us a line! We’d love to talk to you.

Wedding: Jenn & Elise

From Sarah, Jenn and Elise’s photographer: You know the saying “you had me at hello”?Well, I totally experienced that meeting Jenn and Elise and hearing these beautiful words: “There will be TWO wedding dresses, Sarah. And two sets of beautiful shoes. TWO brides, Sarah. How awesome will that be?!” Um, yes. Please. Keep talking! It was actually quite some time ago that we first met, and over that time I feel like I’ve gotten to know these two incredible women quite well. To say that I’ve enjoyed working with them is quite the understatement. To say that they’re clients wouldn’t be correct. These women have become my friends. The entire process has been wonderful and I feel lucky to have captured their love and their wedding day.

So let’s talk about two wedding dresses, two sets of shoes, necklaces, mom/daughter moments, and all that. What a whirlwind, and was I sweating! Oh yes, I love looking for the perfect place, and of course, the most perfect place required balancing precariously on a rolling chair to get the dress hanging perfectly. We schemed about their first glance too, and I was thrilled with the balloon idea. The ceremony was held on the beautiful patio of Valley Ridge Golf Course under the most perfect blue sky. My favourite detail is a tie between the cookies at the ceremony (Okay, I have to stop and talk about the cookies. They’re probably the best cookies I’ve ever tasted and I want some right now actually.) and the Jones Soda inspired pop bottles, painstakingly made by the girls with a photo of each and EVERY guest.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a ‘moment’ kinda girl. I look for moments, sometimes I help them along (I’m sneaky like that), but for the most part I strive for authentic. And you can’t get any more authentic than letting two people who love each other more than anything in the world just be. I am speaking specifically about the AMAZING sunset session we did, where I set them free to just be themselves. Photographer heaven right there. Between the kisses and cuddles, there was also some robot dancing because, let’s be honest, no one can be serious for that long. I truly, 100%, loved every single second.

Wedding: Adelle & Robyn

From belle, Adelle and Robyn’s photographer: Adelle & Robyn were married at St. Andrews-Wesley Church in Vancouver, BC and delivered in style to their portrait location in bicycle taxis. It was such a blast — I was laughing so hard they almost lost their photographer a few times en route!

The theme of the wedding was tropical and the essence was pure fun. Champagne kisses, bicycle and ferryboat rides, and dancing in the streets.

The colours of their wedding were warm and inviting, as are they. It was a joy to photograph this sweet and laid back couple who so obviously completely and utterly adore each other.

Wedding Video: Natasha & Fanny

From Natasha and Fanny’s videographerNatasha and Fanny are an incredibly loving couple. It was a chilly fall day but it was worth it for Nat and Fanny to continue with their original plan for an outdoor fall ceremony. True to their love of hockey, there was a hockey themed kissing game as well as an intimate reception.
