Gallery: Weddings On the Water

With the temperature in the 90s every day here in North Carolina, Ashley and I are longing for lakeside living, and these weddings fit the bill! Last winter, we featured beach weddings (here and here) to cure your winter blues—now, these lovely waterside celebrations offer the perfect breath of fresh air in the midst of a hot summer (at least in this hemisphere!).

Wedding: Mirhanda & MB

From the couple: For most of our (admittedly short) engagement, we thought we were going to elope. Large gatherings are not really our thing, and we would much rather spend the day reading in a tea room. Ultimately, though, all 6 of our Southern parents got involved, and the rest is history.

In the end, our theme became “It’s Not a Wedding Without _______.” In place of gifts, our guests brought the one thing they thought was essential for any wedding to have. By the end of the day, we had flowers, dresses, cake, a photographer, and a trip to Asheville. One of our friends even brought herself as our last-minute officiant (Thanks, Mo!).

The day was wonderful, and we joke that we must be the only couple to be surprised by their own wedding!

Flashback Friday: Kelsey & Meghan

While we’re on vacation this month, the Bicycle Built for Two team (and friends!) are revisiting some of our all-time favorite weddings!

From Maggie:

Kelsey and Meghan’s Minnesota wedding is a DIY dreamboat, from the handmade dress (and atttendants’ dresses!!), invitation-assembling crafternoons, and centerpieces built by Kelsey’s uncle!

As a recent grad school graduate, I can more than sympathize with the desire to have a fabulous wedding that doesn’t involve spending tens of thousands of dollars, and Kelsey and Meghan did just that, with a strict budget of $6,000 and lots of help from friends and family.

As they put it, “At the end of the day, and after all the heart-ache, we learned that the definition and point of marriage is not only about what the couple mean to each other, but what the couple’s community mean to them,” and that’s just what this wedding demonstrates!

Flashback Friday: Katie & Sheila

While we’re on vacation this month, the Bicycle Built for Two team (and friends!) are revisiting some of our all-time favorite weddings!

Today’s wedding is from another one of our friends, Michelle, whose wedding & anniversary story appeared on the blog last year. When we asked for her flashback favorite, she picked Katie & Sheila’s South Carolina wedding from the fall of 2016.

From Michelle:

Everything about this wedding speaks to my heart—the colors, the setting, the tight budget. I deeply empathize with the struggle that comes from a long-distance relationship while one half is in another country—my own wife & began our courtship while she spent eight months away, most of that on the other side of the world. The photos of these ladies on their wedding day are evidence enough that their love is strong & beautiful, enough so that they can weather adversity and gather their loved ones together in celebration of who & what they are.

Favorite points: Guh, the dresses! Talk about “simplistically beautiful”! There’s nothing I don’t love about this wedding attire. (My wife & I also discussed wearing colored gowns while our bridemaids wore white, so my envy is showing a bit here.) The soft, dreamy pastels, the long clean lines of lace, the flower coronets: everything here works to showcase the image (my particular fave is the second-to-last one!) of a marriage built on love, trust, & the joy that comes from being together.

Road Trip: Boston

In 2003, Massachusetts became the first state to recognize marriage equality, so it seems fitting that we’re shipping up to Boston for the first stop on our LBTQ wedding road trip!

In 2014, Melissa & Jamie traveled from Tampa, Florida (where same-sex marriage was not yet legal!) to get married in Boston, and took some adorable photos around the city:

Then, there’s this glorious shot from
 Kate & Amanda‘s wedding at the Ritz-Carlton-Boston-Common:1-Amanda_Kate-269

Erin & Karen‘s wedding on the Boston harbor (or, I should say, “hah-bah”) is also lovely:image10

As is Anne & Tina‘s engagement on the Charles River Esplanade:

I, personally, am completely in love with Carol & Anna’s wedding at the Metropolitan Waterworks Museum:

The Arnold Arboretum has also been a prime location for both weddings, like Jennifer & Shereta‘s…

… and engagements, like Gretchenrae & Molly‘s:

Cambridge has been the place for some hip weddings as well; in particular, Samantha & Whitney‘s wedding at the Blue Room…

… and Katrina & Nora‘s wedding at the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center.

Wedding: Emma & Katie

Emma and Katie’s Georgia wedding was our kind of day: featuring some top-notch dancing, donuts, AND cake. Watch their video here, and be prepared to cry. Their vows are pretty amazing. As for their message on the blog, they kept it simple.

From the bride & broom: It was the best day of our lives and the most fun we’ve ever had (and we have a lot of fun)!
