Engagment: Mackie & Kala

From Mackie: Kala and I met at a burlesque show in Indianapolis. She and I were both dating other people, so we shook hands and went on our way. A few months later we reconnected through Tinder (yes, it’s good for something!) and realized that we had been neighbors for a full YEAR and never knew it! Needless to say, we were inseparable after that.

There is a bridge in my hometown where high schoolers hang signs like “Sarah, will you go to prom with me?” or “Go Vikings!” I never had a sign up there for me. One evening after visiting my parents, we took a walk and I look up: “Mackenzie S., will you marry me?” She got down on one knee and I couldn’t stop smiling.

We live together with a house full of pets and a whole lot of love. We wanted to capture a few moments together before we start planning our June 2, 2018 wedding. I couldn’t be happier.

Anniversary: Kimberly & Hayley

Kim and Hayley’s Banff elopement (complete with wedding dresses and snow boots!) was one of our favorite features from 2016, so we were thrilled to get an update from this binational couple!

From Hayley: Because we never had an official engagement I decided to surprise Kim with a ring on our first anniversary that we spent in Amsterdam. We had a really fun photographer Nadine, and it was a great day. We are still living in separate countries waiting on visas but things are moving a lot closer to an end date, hopefully next time we update we’ll be in the same country!

Wedding: Kourtney & Alana

From Kourtney & Alana: On November 4, 2016, we were married in front of our family and friends in Estes Park, Colorado. We landed on Mary’s Lake Lodge in Estes Park because decorations that were needed would be minimal since we had the backdrop of Rocky Mountain National Park. We decided on things that were important to us: a venue, photographer, an awesome DJ, and enough booze to keep our guests dancing the night away.

We had growler centerpieces that had pictures of those relatives who were no longer with us printed on them. A cigar bar, an amazing DJ with a bright pink mohawk, a photo booth where we had guests sign the backdrop as our ‘guest book,’ a florist who incorporated Colorado’s mountain flowers in arrangements that were simple and rustic—we made sure to focus on things that were perfectly us. We both walked down the aisle with our dads to Elle Goulding’s “How Long Will I Love You.” Our best friend officiated the wedding. While we each only had one maid of honor, we wanted our other friends to feel included, so before the wedding we sent out a letter asking them to all wear different shades of the same color. It turns out our friends are pretty good at matching, so you could tell they were still special to us, even if we didn’t have a big bridal party.

As we planned our special day, the one thing we could not plan on was the amount of love our family and friends brought with them. It ended up being a weekend of fun and a celebration of love. Family from both coasts came together, and it reaffirmed our belief that if you lead with love, love will always win.

Engagement: Kayla & Lauren

From Kayla: Lauren and I met in college. We were engaged in October of 2015 when Lauren took me to an art museum and we stumbled upon a serenity garden downtown. After a few minutes of talking Lauren got down on one knee and proposed. I answered with “only if you say yes to me” and pulled out her grandmother’s ring. I had been carrying it around for two weeks waiting for her to ask. She was totally surprised. When we first found A Bicycle Built for Two it provided so much positivity and light for us. Almost five years later, we’re sharing our engagement photos in celebration of our wedding this summer.

Wedding: Rocio & Riza

From Riza: Rocio and I met on October 1st, 2010, Rocio proposed to me on October 1st, 2015, and we were married on Oct 1st, 2016. We both love the desert and decided to have an outdoor wedding at the Le Haute Desert Aerie in Pioneertown. We walked down the aisle to mariachis playing and we were married by our close friend Sara. For the reception we served ceviche and chorizo tostadas as an appetizer and tacos for dinner. My friend Sam, who I went college with was the DJ, and she kept everyone dancing the entire night. Having our closest friends and family all together and dancing in one place was an amazing experience. It was the happiest, and hands down, the best day of my life!

Wedding: Emily & Robin

From Emily & Robin: Our story starts like a cliche, in a bar—our love is anything but…

We both went to a meet-up group mixer one night in November of 2014, and by luck we ended up in a grouping together at the start of the event. We talked during a break, followed each other throughout the rest of the events for the night, and afterwards went to talk more over tea, ending up walking around the streets of the West Village getting to know each other for another couple hours. We both knew right away that this was different, and within a week we had fallen in love. Robin was invited to family Christmas 10 days later, and marriage was talked about in the first two weeks.  We got engaged a year later and started planning our intimate wedding shortly after. We had gone to Aurora Brooklyn (our venue) on our third date and again the night we got engaged. Their garden atrium was the perfect place for our ceremony, and their food is out of this world—and an important requirement for our wedding. We wanted it to be filled with good friends, our wonderful families, great food, and an amazing time.   And it was. We opted to do a lot of the decorations ourselves, i.e. the backdrop, the flowers, and a lot of smaller decorative elements. We also used Etsy and close friends for the bigger parts: our cake-topper, hair and make-up, and our day-of coordinator. All of this helped to reduce the cost of a NYC wedding so that we could spend our money on an amazing wedding photographer and a fantastic venue.  We couldn’t have asked for a better event—it really was everything we wanted and more!

Wedding: Kaysey & Jacque

From Kaysey: Jacque and I married on a beautiful autumn day in Portland at Holocene, a local club/venue that hosts many queer dance parties that we have enjoyed over the years. Out friends and family did a brilliant job decorating and bringing the warm colors of autumn into the room. My little brother sang an original song as we walked down the aisle. Our best friend Mark married us, and we all nervously giggled together. We served tacos and cupcakes and spent the night dancing to our favorite songs. It was the most joyful room I have ever been in. My advice: make the ceremony your own. If you want to be political, poetic, spiritual, religious, traditional, radical—do it! We chose an excerpt from the Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision during our ceremony, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the place. I’m so grateful to be married to this strong, sensitive, beautiful best friend of mine!
