From Gay Destination Weddings, who helped organize Joann & Dawn’s big day: Joann and Dawn knew they wanted a carefree destination wedding that doubled as an extended vacation with their closest family and friends. And they found just that at the Sandos Resort in Cancun, Mexico.
Repurposing seashells and starfish elements from Dawn’s mother’s own beachside wedding over 20 years ago, the brides paid homage to their past while celebrating their future on the sandy shores of the Gulf of Mexico.
To infuse their personalities into their away-from-home celebration, they brought along custom wedding hashtagged Cards Against Humanity cards, cheeky wedding signage, and unique passport wedding stationery. Once the sun went down, Joann and Dawn rocked it out all night long with their loved ones underneath the stars—complete with one big finale as the two jumped into the resort pool with their gowns on!
How They Met
From Dawn: It was June 9th, 2011 when I met Joann. It was a beautiful day. To be perfectly honest, I had a sense that I was going to meet someone amazing that day. In fact, I even wrote it down. There was a street festival going on and people everywhere. I went to a local watering hole to meet up with a friend, whom I immediately had to escort into a cab. Shortly after sending my extremely drunk friend home, a very tall girl cornered me at the pool table. Unbeknownst to me, Joann had spotted my very unimpressed body language and swooped in as my hero. Joann pretended that we knew each other and that we had an unfinished conversation. I jumped on the opportunity to escape. Joann‘s quick-witted humor was one thing, but I quickly found that she has a heart of gold as well. I was hooked.
From Joann: As Dawn shared above, we met a few years ago after Market Days, and the rest is history! Although she lived way up north, and I practically needed my passport to go see her, she welcomed any opportunity to come to Wicker Park to visit Piece Pizza, Big Star Tacos, and of course, see me! Three years of dating later, we’ve moved in together and have adopted our baby June-Bug. She is GREAT practice for a family—and a test of our patience. We’ve had some great adventures together traveling in the country and out. Mostly, I look forward to the adventures our future will bring us. But the best part of Dawn and I being engaged might have been that we definitely didn’t have to worry about whose last name to take!
