Back in January of 2010 Tara and I both started blogging about trying to move more, get healthy and get fit. We discovered one another’s blogs soon after we began and followed each other’s journey’s for a year a Continent apart. Me in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and Tara in Tacoma, Washington, USA. We supported one another online from 3300 Miles apart for over a year, and watching on our blogs as we transformed, each of us losing over 110lbs and becoming athletes.
In April of 2011 we finally had the chance to meet in person. I was travelling to Vancouver, BC for a conference (a 4 hour drive from Tacoma) and Tara drove up to meet me in person. When I met Tara in person in April of 2011 we met as friends who had supported one another online. I never dreamed in a million years I would fall for her, nor her I. But the connection was undeniable.
Tara is truly my super hero. Her approach to health and fitness and her mindset about what that means is incredible. Being with Tara was like having a window into my own world. There was no one else in my life who understood how very different my life was in a new body. We were both swept away in our very own love story.
After we met in person I travelled back to Halifax, and Tara to Tacoma, WA and we were in almost constant contact. I made plans to travel back to see her in July for three weeks.
I flew to Sea-Tac on July 14th. On Saturday, July 16th, after we completed Warrior Dash together (a 5K Mud Run with obstacles) Tara proposed. I said yes.
10 days later, we eloped in Vancouver BC.
We didn’t tell a soul about our wedding plans. We arranged for the incredible duo of Nordica Photography (based out of Vancouver) to take our photographs for our wedding day. Cole and Jakob were kind enough to act as our formal legal witnesses for our ceremony in an incredible graffiti-ed alley in West Vancouver.
We started our day together running around Vancouver making the day-of preparations. I found a spot to have my hair done early in the morning. We headed to a coffee shop where we wrote each other letters to be opened on our 1st Anniversary (which is coming up next week) – the paper anniversary. I went to Mac and had them do my make up. I found my dress at Anthropologie ( a very non-traditional wedding dress) and Tara wore a simple dark dress shirt and dark jeans. I had the subway flower boutique in Vancouver do up a simple and brightly colored bouquet for me. And we bought ourselves a giant cupcake to share for after the ceremony in our hotel room. It was the most perfect day.
We are celebrating our 1st anniversary together here in Halifax (where we’ve lived together since November) and are awaiting Tara’s Permanent Resident card. We are blessed to have incredible family and friends who were surprised with our secret elopement, but incredibly supportive of our love.

I have to say witnessing you two… Shedding the weight, becoming athletes and falling for one another was truly one of the most amazing things ever. Happy first year anniversary.
