From Catherine Abegg from Seattle-based CALIMAportraits: When I first met with Aimee & Helen and they told me the things that they love doing together, they were all outdoorsy things such as hiking, camping (the rugged type!), canoeing & running. So I just knew that their engagement session had to be something adventurous & fun, to reflect their energy…. but within my adventure spectrum! I’m a bona-fide city girl, and live by the quote, “I’m outdoorsy, in that I like to sit on the patio & have a beer.” So after much discussion on when/where/how we would do their engagement session, they decided to rent a canoe from the University of Washington, and rowed over to where I was waiting at Seattle’s famed Arboretum Park… I’m not kidding you when I say that I could hear them laughing & singing as they rowed over to me! It was the sweetest thing ever! Aimee & Helen brought a picnic with them–with champagne, PBR’s & strawberries–and we continued our shoot with a little picnic & lounging around… and I found out that Aimee had proposed to Helen with the same picnic setup that they had brought to their photo shoot, with her engagement ring hiding in the picnic basket. I absolutely loved getting to know these two & having the pleasure of witnessing how much in love they are with each other… they both warned me that they were “awkward” in front of the camera, so what you see in these photos is them being completely & naturally infatuated with each other, which in turn makes for the most lovely & organic engagement photos. My favorite kind… and I can’t wait for their island wedding in September!
Honest-to-goodness picnic outings by outdoorsy people are what many are mimicking when they shoot their engagement photos with props from a faux picnic and faux frolic in the outdoors. Aimee and Helen’s realness shines right through. Love it!
By the way we need more wedding submissions (that doesn’t mean you should stop the engagement sessions for coming) so if you have one that you have been sitting on please send it!
